Magazine Editor Contacts

By on January 22nd, 2007

I just stumbled across a rather nifty resource (both from a writer’s perspective and a PR pro’s perspective) which is a database of magazine mastheads (contact name, phone numbers, email address, etc.). The tool is great for things from knowing who to pitch a press release to, to knowing what beat editor to contact if you want to query someone for a freelance submission.

The site is Mastheads.org. It’s subscription-based, but certainly worth it. I signed up for a week’s access just to test it out ($4), but I’ll be signing up for the year when that expires ($24, but you also get a free magazine subscription with a yearly order – perks are always fun). For what you have access to, it’s worth it; certainly better than manually digging through magazines looking for the most recent versions. It even looks like it’s updated with each new edition of each magazine, so you don’t have to worry about things getting stale quickly in the ever-changing publishing world.

Give it a shot, and leave any comments here if you’d like to share feedback for others.

    Jenn,
I looked into mastheads.org, but found that the Writer’s Market has more comprenhensive information (what types of stories they look for, rough pay scales, etc.), although it’s not as up-to-date. Bacon’s Media Source is the ultimate resource for PR professionals, because it lets you compile media lists, print mailing labels, etc.

It’s not meant to be an all-out media database… just a cheap option to help writers properly address their queries. I’m a PR person myself, so I’m familiar with Bacon’s. They’re great, but I’ve always been partial to Burrelle’s media database personally. :)
