Being Your Own Publicist

By on February 15th, 2007

I’ve been reading The Wealthy Writer by Michael Meanwell, and really love the book (probably because it’s written by a writer with a PR background, which is my own primary focus). I love the way he dives into PR for writers (something not enough freelance writing books hit on). So for that alone, I highly recommend it. Anyway, it got me thinking… as a writer (especially if you’re a published author), do you essentially work as your own publicist?

I’m a publicist, so my answer is a resounding yes. But what about other writers? Does the thought of having to build your own publicity scare you, or is it something that you embrace? Do you simply hire a publicist or let a publisher deal with most of it, or are you a DIY type? Would it be helpful to you if I start posting about publicity tactics here? Would it be more effective if I handle it more like a column, where you contact me with specific questions, and I’ll answer them on the blog? If there’s no interest, I don’t want to introduce those kinds of posts. If there is, then let’s get to it. :) If you have feedback or questions, you can feel free to comment here or email me at jenn(at)sixfigurewriters(dot)com.

For now, I’m my own publicist, and yes, it’s a scary thought at times. I certainly would benefit from some information on publicity for writers, even if it’s just a single post with some key tactics.

I’m working as my own publicist, and I think it’s a necessary part of the business. I definitely want to learn more about publicity.

  3. I’m not sure how old this post is because I was browsing through your categories, but I’ll respond anyway… yes, I too would like to learn more about publicity. I’m also my own publicist, and I enjoy it because I can personally answer all fan mail myself. Of course, if I ever decide to hire a publicist, I would let him or her know I want to answer all the fan mail on my own. I believe fan mail should be answered by the writer, because it’s a way to connect with your fans and communicate with them. Even if I become well-known, I’ll always do my best to respond to my own my fan mail.

Thanks for the feedback. :) I already have my SFW posts for this week and next week scheduled, but if I find some free time, I’ll work in one or two publicity posts for writers. And if not, I’ll schedule a few into the following week’s post. :)
