Six Figure Blogging - What’s Your Plan?

April 10, 2007 – 11:14 am

I came across a post on a forum recently asking not only about six figure writing, but more specifically six figure blogging, and how someone could become a six figure blogger. I’m a big believer in diversifying income streams as a writer, which is why I take on client work, run content sites and blogs, sell PLR articles, etc. I think if I tried to earn six figures from blogging alone, I’d get terribly bored. But for some people, it’s their dream. So let me ask you… if you wanted to become a six figure blogger, what would your plan look like?

Would you focus your writing, promotion, and monetization efforts on one blog?

Would you build a network of blogs in one niche?

Would you manage multiple blogs in completely unrelated topics?

If it were me, I’d do exactly what I’m doing now (only I’d post more regularly and actually spend some good time promoting :D). I’d stick with multiple blogs, in different niches, but within niches that I’m comfortable writing in (things that fall within my area of expertise - small business, marketing, PR, indie music, etc.). I’m lucky in that most of the niches I favor (all but indie music) tend to monetize reasonably well for ad revenue, and even indie music isn’t hard to monetize in other ways, b/c of enormous networking opportunities. Who knows… if I ever give up my main work as a PR consultant, perhaps I’ll give it a go. ;)

So how would you do it?

  2. I do so much better when I focus, so I’d pick a niche and research it to see what blogs are already there. Which ones are successful, which ones aren’t? What are the successful ones not doing that I could? What information are people looking for that blogs aren’t currently providing? Then I’d plan my blog from there.

I’d write some really good content, promote the heck out of the blog, and then start selling ad space. I might make a few spin-off blogs of the first one, but I’d remain in the same niche.
