I disagree, but agree in some aspects...

Disagreements

1. there are many different strategies and types of marketing. which one are you discribing? direct, internet, radio, etc...

2. a good marketer never has to sell anyting to anyone (sales people sell products, not marketers, thus you will never get a marketing person cold calling you)...No one needs a $200 a month cell phone, but a Good Marketer will create a need for it, and why you need to go to the store and get it...The sales person then closes the deal...

3. marketers get leads to call in, mail in, visitors to your website, people to call in to your radio show...marketers are like pr people, as where they create AWARENESS of a product..

I Agree

Yes, PR folks don't have much control over their message, but thier are guidelines that they can follow to ensure better control...

Yes, I have seen a PR Blast back fire a few times, but none the less, exposure is exposure, good or bad, and a little controversy and real honest review isn't bad at all...I would rather the real reviews than fabricated ones, that everyone, including the writer of the piece sees through...
