Wonderfully written! I think you should try selling this article to writing-related publications that have a large number of beginning freelance writers as their readers. This is also a great article for publications that target webmasters, editors, publishers and other who hire freelance writers.

I tried tackling the issue of crunching the numbers earlier this year in my writing forums, but with the number of private requests I get for referrals and people wanting to know about "fair" rates, and seeing the topic covered today in a forum I frequent, it just felt like it was time to hit it from the buyer's perspective... not necessarily to try to get people to pay more, but to help them finally understand where we get our rates from, and why we won't work for peanuts. :)

It's also going to tie into this week's writing challenge actually... but more on that tomorrow. :)

Excellent article, Jennifer. Too many people - freelancers and clients alike - don't realize the differences between an hourly wage and an hourly rate for contract work.

Great article. This ties in to a post I recently made about how freelance writers set their rates. We're self employed, folks - we can't work for free, no matter how much we like you.

I found that many people are also surprised that freelance writers declare their income. Hey, we need proof of income to get loans, mortgages and credit cards - just like everyone else does.

Should you pay $50 an hour for a freelancer? Maybe, maybe not. It all depends on your fit with the person and their skills. Many a good writer works for far less - many a bad writer words for far more.

One word of advice: Never shop for a writer by price. Go by quality and a reasonable, fair budget. You won't regret it.
