Great article! I don't know how many times I come across a client who says, hey I can get billy bob to do this for 2 bucks...I reply with you get what you pay for thanks for your time...then they come back in about a month after getting junk for content. I never use a fixed price, but like you say I base it on niche, level of effort that's going to be required, and so forth! Freelance writing is definitely not a cookie cutter when focusing on quality content. Cheers,James

It seems like common sense: you can't make a living working for free, and you're better off not participating in a race to the bottom.

My rule of thumb is pretty simple. If somebody else wants to profit from my work, they'll have to pay for it. I do plenty of pro-bono ( I'm a photographer, by the way, not a writer ) work, usually for charity. On the other hand, if somebody wants me to work for them, on the hope that they might be willing to pay me next time ... I'd rather invest the time the work would have taken me, into a good hike.

I hope people take your excellent advice to heart.

That's funny that you call the price-only type of customers the "little kiddie" clients. I think of hem the same way- they don't really know anything about business and will never make a dime. Most of them just want to brag about the low price they paid for their articles. It makes them feel important somehow, even if they never get a return at all.

[...] They Market Freelance Writing Services Solely on Price - I’m not even going to begin to get into why you shouldn’t do this. But anyone with an ounce of marketing sense would slap you silly if they caught you trying. Just don’t. Take my word for it. No? Then read this. [...]
