Now that I’m exclusively writing rather than being “on-call” for PR consulting, my work has become much more flexible. On top of that, I’ve never been a big traveller, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to spend time doing. It got me thinking – why not work from the road as a freelance writer?
I don’t know if I would ever have it in me to do it for long (I’m definitely the “settling down” type, and am currently trying to figure out exactly where I want to start doing that in the next year or two). But it’s a nice thought, isn’t it?
So let me ask you… have you ever taken time to travel while you made your living as a freelance writer (for an extended period like a year or two; not just a short trip)? I’m not just talking about travel writing, but any kind of freelance writing. I imagine it could be tougher if you focus on something like magazine writing where you may be paid with print checks, but if most of your payments are done through an online payment processor or through bank transfers, it seems like something that could work quite well.
That said, I’m sure it comes with its own challenges (for me, I know I’d constantly be distracted wanting to do and see everything in any place I was visiting, rather than writing). But that’s why I’m asking – I really don’t know, and I’d love to hear from writers who do!
