Cold Weather Writing Necessities

The weather where I live got very cold very quickly. To make matters worse, my apartment faces the north side of my building – our apartments are like ice boxes, while apartments on the other side get great sunlight and natural heat. Needless to say, this is a less than fun part of starting work so early in the morning. As of yesterday though, I think I’ve gathered all but one of my new “cold weather writing necessities” to get me through my days both comfortably and productively. Here’s what I have:

  • Warm socks
  • Fuzzy slippers
  • A thick, warm robe
  • Bandanas and hats when my head’s freezing early
  • A heater obviously (although I’ve yet to turn it on this season)
  • Coffee
  • Candles (to warm my icy fingers over – not to mention that I love the smell!)

The “icy fingers” part is still the toughest. Sometimes I can barely feel my fingers, nonetheless control them – not good when you’re typing up a client project. The warm cup of coffee and candles help a bit, but not when I’m actually typing. So the one thing I still want to get is another pair of gloves which I’ll cut the finger tips off of for typing. Does anyone else do this? How does it work for you?

Is anyone else finding themselves adjusting to the cooling weather yet? What are your must-haves, or what do you do to stay as comfortable as possible while working? (I have to admit – the robe and slippers are enough to remind me why I love freelancing over a long early morning commute any day!)

  1. I will confess that I do the glove thing… cutting of the finger tips and all. I pass on the robe and substitute a good thick pair of sweatpants in their place. I will also confess that I have from time to time stuck my ten little piggies underneath my dog Abbie who sometimes curls up under my desk… I’ll call that bonding with the pooch though.

These are necessary things that we’re talking about. I have found few things to be as distracting as cold temperature, anything that can be done to stay warm in the winter allows me to concentrate on the task at hand a little better.

  2. I like cool evenings; they keep my fingers moving to stay warm. I have to admit I often type one-handed becaue I have my infant son on my chest. This gets challenging, but he is keeping me warmer and working.

  3. I had to do the glove thing at my last apartment. Yikes!

Lemon tea, alternating with hot chocolate that contains a healthy sprinkling of cayenne and cinnamon. Mmmmm… my winter writing fave.

  4. Do you knit? I had a job for which I needed to work downstairs in the coldest room of the house. I made myself knitted handwarmers which are probably the easiest thing to knit imaginable. They helped a lot! The basic instructions are:

    1. knit a rectangle wide enough to go from knuckles to wrist and long enough to go around your hand.

    2. sew together except for a tiny hole for your thumb.

If you can’t knit, the glove thing should work ;) .

  5. I have steam heat which is pretty efficient most of the time, but the robe and warm socks are must-haves in the late afternoon when the heat isn’t kicking in….

  6. You need USB gloves! They’re on my list of things to get this year!!!

Here’s a link (this is not affiliate, spam, etc). They’y plug into your USB ports and have warmers inside!
