Tracking Word Count

This item was filed under [ Book Writing ]

One of my big projects for the New Year is to finish a novel draft for a mystery I outlined several years ago. I’ve spent the last few days (and will probably spend a week more) fleshing out some things and making a few changes to the outline that I decided on after reviewing it.

I’m getting close to starting the draft, and I’d like a way to track my word count accumulation on my blog(s).

So I’m turning to you – what are your favorite tools to track word count? – preferably ones that can be used in a Wordpress widget / sidebar easily, and they would need to enable customized goals rather than just a random count (in other words, I’d prefer one that doesn’t just list how many words I’ve written so far, but that also includes the goal and shows the percentage completed).

Any suggestions?

It’s not very pretty, but I use Word Advance Progress Meter. It does show a percentage number, but a progress bar. The program creates a graphic that you link to, and it’s easy to put the code in a text widget.

    Thanks Lisa. :)

I just found this blog post with a few decent options listed – the first one there is exactly what I wanted (and very much like what we used to use on the writing forums here). I’ll have to go ahead and add that to my widgets this week. :)

My favorite is StoryToolz. There’s a widget for it on my blog. Oh, my other blog slingwords.blogspot.com in the right column.

The thing I like is it gives you the bar graph of completed words to total words. I’ll be updating my storytoolz bar for the work I’m currently revising. Highly recommended, Jennifer.
