Better Blog Organization

By on March 30th, 2009

I’m nearing 1000 posts here at All Freelance Writing (should hit that target in April). With a growing number of posts, I’ve been wondering if a better way of organizing category archives is in order.

Don’t worry. I won’t be changing actual categories, links to them, or anything like that. Rather, I’m considering changing how those categories are displayed.

Right now when you click a category, you’ll see a bloggy-looking list of the last 10 or so posts and an excerpt of each. I don’t find those cut-off excerpts terribly useful personally, and as post counts go up, it becomes more aggravating (for me at least) to scroll through page after page in a category to look for posts.

Does that ever annoy anyone else when reading blogs?

Anyway, the theme I’m using on my business blog is setup differently. There, when you click on a category you get the excerpt for the most recent post, and then a full list of title links to all other posts in the category–no scrolling from one page to the next necessary.

I like that, because it lets you see older posts that may still have some value.

Would you like me to see if I can do something similar here, or do you prefer keeping those category listings as they are? I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to make the change successfully, but I figured I’d ask.

I prefer the BizHow2 approach; it is cleaner and quicker to grasp. Just ensure the titles are descriptive.

The business blog seems more user-friendly. But for the current one, I’ve clicked on older posts because I saw the little description there.
