In an FWJ comment earlier today, I shared one of my favorite online business tools. I don’t believe I’ve shared that with you here previously, so I’d like to today. The tool can be found at PCnames.com and it is designed to help you choose domain names.
Step 1: Visit PCnames.com.
Step 2: Click on “More Tools.”
Step 3: Click the “word search” link on the left side of the page.
Step 4: Click the “advanced search” link next to the search button.
Step 5: Make sure only the TLDs you’re interested in are checked (TLDs are top level domain extensions like .com, .net, .org, etc.). For the example here, I’m only going to search .com domains.
Step 6: Type in one or more keywords you would like to see included in the domain name (for the example, I’ll assume you’re a Web content writer looking for “Web content” in your domain name for your new professional site).
Step 7 (optional): In the advanced search settings, you can use the drop-down menu to have those keywords show at the beginning of the domain name, the end, or anywhere. For the example, I’ll choose anywhere.
Step 8: Click the search button to get your list of available domain names featuring your keyword phrase.
Note: Not every domain name listed there is really available (although most I’ve found are). I suggest keeping a second window opened to a registrar’s site–like GoDaddy–so you can do a search when you find a good domain name to check its actual availability.
Example Search Results
If you did the search I mentioned above, here are some of the available domain names you would have found (note: these domains were verified as still available at the time of this posting).
- ContentWriterSolutions.com
- DigitalContentWriter.com
- BestContentWriter.com
You would also find domains relevant to specific niches, such as:
- GreenContentWriter.com
- TravelContentWriter.com
- BusinessContentWriter.com
The tool is also great for finding possible domain names for a new niche blog you may be considering launching. Give it a whirl and see what you come up with. just remember to double check availability with a registrar. I find that even if I’m not crazy about the specific ideas the tool spits out, those suggestions often lead me to search for related ones – it’s how I came up with ProBusinessWriter.com for my business (not to mention FirstRateContent.com which was its old domain that did very well by it), as well as NakedPR.com (which have proven to be incredibly brandable and generally successful in the niche), and even AllFreelanceWriting.com and WebWritersGuide.com (which ultimately became the series name for my e-books).
Come up with something interesting there? Tell us about it–after you register it of course. :)
