My personal opinion is that it's always better to host your own blog rather than going with Wordpress.com, blogspot, etc. (at least when dealing with professional blogs). It looks more professional, you have more freedom in how you're allowed to monetize them, and if you later choose to move it you'll be able to use redirects so you don't lose links and traffic like you would with giving up a free blog.
