In a comment on one of my posts here I recently threw out the idea of doing a 30-day marketing boot camp for freelance writers. After initial feedback, I’ve decided to move ahead with that plan.
I was also notified that Thursday Bram did something similar recently (I remember seeing a few of the posts along the way). While you may see a bit of overlap in general topics covered, I also promise you’ll find plenty of differences. But if you can’t wait until September 1st for your marketing fill, then I strongly suggest you check out her series: Market Your Freelance Writing in 31 Days
My series will more specifically be a 30 day marketing boot camp for those writers who are tired of scouring job boards, sending out applications, and writing query letters. The series will be posted on my other freelance writing blog — QueryFreeFreelancer.com.
If you’re familiar with that project, you’ll know that I focus on offering tools and advice to help freelance writers move beyond querying to make work come to them. That’s what the 30 day marketing boot camp will focus on. You won’t find tips on using bidding sites or lists of places where you can find writing jobs advertised (you can get that info here already anyway). But you will find things like:
- Advice on identifying your target market and target audiences (and what the difference is between them)
- Tips on improving the search engine rankings (better SEO) for your professional site
- Tips and maybe a template for creating a professional site
- Hints on getting started with social media
- A list of places to find potential clients who don’t advertise gigs
- How to get your existing network and clients to bring more work to your door
- And much more!
As you may know, I give away some exclusive freebies for writers on that blog (right now you’ll find a free report / e-book, a Web template, and two Wordpress themes you can’t download anywhere else). I’ll try to think up some new goodies for next month’s series (including a publicity / platform-building plan template that I’ve been meaning to put together). To access those freebies though, you need to register on the site — registration is free. Hope to see you then!

Oh yeah, that sounds really good. I’d really like to supercharge my efforts-so far I’ve made a little bit of progress, but I’d like to do better. I’ll keep an eye on both of your sites.
Woohoo! That’s great news. Looking forward to it.
Great idea, Jen! Thursday really did a fantastic job with her series. It’s coming at a good time for me since I’ll be preparing to launch a major marketing campaign. I’ll definitely be looking forward to yours starting September 1!
