30 Day Marketing Bootcamp for Freelance Writers – Day 16

By on September 28th, 2009

Sorry for the delay folks. Other areas of life have been monopolizing time lately. But today we’re going to jump right back in where we left off. You’re going to announce and promote the free report you finished up last week.

Background

Having a free report or e-book to help demonstrate your authority status in a niche means absolutely nothing if you don’t promote it. You have to let members of your target market know that it’s there. That’s what we’ll be working on today.

Exercises

1. Go to your networking environments (like forums and social networks) and add a link to your download page. You can also post a tweet to announce your free report if you use Twitter. If you market through an email signature, that’s another good place to add the link, especially if you converse that way with potential clients.

2. Write a press release announcing the launch of the report. Rather than getting into the “how” of that here, I’m just going to link you to my own free e-book on the topic which includes a free press release template – Press Releases Made Easy.

3. Distribute your press release. If you target local clients, your best bet is to submit your press release to your local newspaper(s). If you plan to distribute it online instead, you’ll have to choose either paid or free distribution (paid is better for SEO usually, because you’ll get the links, tagging, and other SEO benefits). If you want an affordable paid option, you could try WebWire.com. If you prefer looking for free options, you can browse my big list of free press release distribution sites from NakedPR.com. I don’t update the list often, so I won’t guarantee that they’re all still live or free, but you should be able to find one or two decent options in there. Note: mass-submitting to tons of free distribution sites is not better.

Okay, I’m definitely saving this step when I finish the other ebook. I don’t think it’s right to use a press release for something trivial like my first ebook.
