It's a tough call. 5000 hits a day isn't at all unattainable, so don't let that discourage you. Remember, a hit is accessing any file on the site. 5000 pageviews would be tougher, and 5000 unique visitors would be rather ambitious for a brand new site to shoot for on a daily basis, but hits is doable.

I would say to be careful writing this kind of thing. Make sure you're abiding by the new FTC guidelines on disclosure if you or the client is US-based. There's nothing "wrong" with it though, and whether or not it can be optimized for multiple niches will depend entirely on your and the client's SEO abilities. If they're an SEO pro it would probably be much easier for them than if they were new to it.

Look at any content network -- technically they're hosting content in dozens, if not hundreds, of niches under one primary domain. Optimization is a per-page thing. However, it would be more difficult to optimize the main areas of the site for anything particular, meaning branding elements would have to overpower SEO if they want to take advantage of any significant level of type-in traffic / visitor loyalty, and that would be very hard to do on a site riddled with CPA offers in every post. It's all about what the client wants. Are they only worried about SE traffic to internal pages? Then having them on the same site won't be a huge problem. Do they care about the visitor loyalty, natural referrals, etc.? If so, I've found niche-specialized sites do much better (why those same content networks generally break down into subdomains or folders for internal separate sites).

Hi Jennifer, As usual great advice.
I'm wondering if you could advise me a little about CPA networks. A client has asked me to write articles for his new site, which he's hoping to get 5000 hits(!!!)a day. Each article will have an offer, and he's hoping to make revenue from visitors sign up to these offers (typically around a dollar or two a sign up). The thing I'm not clear on is that his site has a massive range of topics, because he wants to optimize it for the max number of keywords. It's surely better to have a specific niche, I thought. And he's unlikely to be able to optimize for that many keywords in so many different topics. Would you agree?
The site is http://www.mymediapartnership.com if you have time to check it out. Not being au fait with CPA networks, I'm not sure how best to advise him and would really appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks a million.

For Adsense there was no wait because you only need one account for all of your sites. Easy way around that if you don't have any is to launch a quick blogspot blog and apply through there - approvals are pretty quick and easy that way, and then you can use Adsense on your own site as well.

For affiliate programs it's just a typical waiting game if I want a program I'm not already a member of for another site -- that's why I had to wait about a month before getting approved for the one real niche affiliate program appropriate for the site.

I know that it can be harder to get into affiliate marketing programs with a brand new site. How have you been getting around that with this new site?

Since you're using a hosted version of Wordpress I'm not sure what you're able to add. I believe their blogs are supposed to be noncommercial, so you'd have to check the terms at Wordpress.com.

If you're allowed to put in ads and banners, then you would either do it through a sidebar widget or you would upload the image somewhere (not sure if you can directly through Wordpress when you're not hosting it yourself) and then you'd add the link and image code to the template files (which will vary depending on where you want it - in posts, header, sidebar, etc.). There's no one-size-fits-all answer.

Very passively through forums -- it's sitting in a signature link at one where my target audience is (I have over 8000 posts there so it's present enough around the community). I just changed the link text over there to something I'm hoping will entice more people to click. Went from "PR writing" to "press release writing" more specifically since it's something they tend to look for more and that's the post series going on now.

As I expand the series, I'll be promoting the posts more actively via Twitter, and with the next post I'll probably also put the recent blog posts up at the forum so it'll display my latest post there (it displays the posts from this blog now I believe).

And then I do announce some things on a social network I use very privately. I don't use it to connect to people outside of friends and family so it's not a huge reach there, but they sometimes do a good job of spreading the word elsewhere when I have launches. And if nothing else I know some of them will check it out.

This is a very typical "light launch" for me -- the kinds of things I do with most of my site launches (only exceptions being when I plan bigger, harder launch campaigns, but it's rare that I put that much effort into them up front). And most of my soft launches hit 3-figure incomes within a few months even w/o anything aggressive, so I'm hoping this one will prove to be an example.

Hmmm. Interesting. I'm practically doing the same thing with my blog. These days, though, I'm using LinkedIn and Twitter more to promote my posts as well as business stuff. (In fact, I used it today to promote my guest post at Copyblogger.) I'll stay tuned and see what techniques you use next.
