Thanks for your investigative work with that, Salma. Jenn’s got a point–this poor guy is probably going to lose, not due to poor design, but due to what this site means for Elance’s brand. Usually I’m not duped by stuff like this so it’s all the worse if a search savvy person such as yours truly can be fooled. If only he’d just put up a job for bid on Elance instead…

I actually think that’s almost more interesting than it being a direct Elance contractor. So what we have then is someone who’s trying to win a contest with Elance, but who might be completely killing their chance due to being a bit too enthusiastic — not only using the Elance trademark in an obviously-confusing way that could constitute trademark violation, but also showing they care so much about Elance that they’ll look elsewhere for contractors. lol

hey clint: a little brush up on the facts. Elance energy is a website launched by an Elance user (provider or buyer) to participate in Elance’s New Way to Work contest http://www.elance.com/p/blog/2009/09/the_new_way_to_work.html

Elance energy is NOT a venture by Elance, although I can see Elance having issues with their name in the URL, which would be enough to confuse others just as it confused you.

You can also check out the contest’s facebook page to see that elance energy is a contest entry: http://www.facebook.com/Elance?ref=ts The creator of this site Wesley Asbell appears to be going all out to win the contest by putting up a whole website instead of just a single entry.

And no I’m not a spokesperson for elance or elance energy or anyone. Just an elance user who knows about the contest

Yeah, my guess is that it’s a contractor versus Elance itself which begs two more questions–A) why would Elance let this happen and B) where did this third party contractor come from? Like I said. It blew my mind.

I’m wondering how they’re actually tied to Elance. The language in the ad is somewhat vague. Elance might own the site, or it could be something like a marketing / SEO firm owning the site to help promote Elance as a client. In either case, if Elance has anything at all to do with the site (including through their own contractors) then they definitely should have been using Elance instead of CL. Looks like either they’re being a bit ironic or someone’s risking a trademark violation if it’s a completely 3rd party project. The WHOIS info on the domain makes me think it’s either a 3rd party issue or a contractor. Can’t imagine why Elance themselves would register with a yahoo.com email address instead of a company one.
