We’re just three days shy of Christmas, and let’s be honest–no matter what your faith or beliefs, the last thing on your mind is freelance writing jobs. But your friendly neighborhood gig-gatherer has had it at the forefront of his brain all week, so please enjoy this penultimate post for the decade! Pickings are a bit lean this week but, well, we’ll get into that in a moment.

The Freelance Writing Jobs

  1. Ventura County article writer – If you are intimately familiar with Ventura County (but not necessarily based there), this is the perfect freelance writing gig for you. Articles range from culture to travel and articles can clock in anywhere from 500 to 1,500 words. Send a query with a pitch and writing samples. Pay is $0.20 per word, which means $100 to $300 per article.
  2. Print journalist – Writers are needed for a product launch coming up in January 2010 in Manhattan. Articles will be anywhere from 50 – 200 words depending on the print or online publication. For this freelance writing gig, it would be a good idea to show off your best short copy and make sure it is punchy. Pay is $35 – $100 depending on the publication–don’t dip below $50 for this!
  3. Career guide writerFabjob.com is looking for someone who has experience in a wide range of careers to put together an e-book career guide for their site. Preferably you should be an expert in one of the fields for which they’re currently seeking someone, although they will make an exception for great writers with fabulous research skills. To apply, click here. Pay is anywhere from $150 to $2,000 depending on the assignment.
  4. Cultural contributor – Writers with deep cultural knowledge of Latin American countries (plus Equatorial Guinea) are needed to contribute cultural tidbits in both written and video format for a new textbook/interactive website. You must have a digital video recording device for this position. To apply, send an email to lrinke@teachersdiscovery.com including a one paragraph sample. Pay is $100 for contributions.
  5. Dating ebook – You must have an Elance account to apply for this position. This client is looking for a writer to put together a book about dating including details about how to get a guy to notice you, flirting, and how to dress. Check on the length of this one to ensure it isn’t an unreasonable amount of work for compensation. Pay is $500 to $1,000, depending on your bid.

Freelance Writing Job Tip of the Week

Don’t just bid for advertised gigs. If you do, then you’ll suffer leaner times more frequently and be at the mercy of the market. I know that this might seem like a reiteration of previous tips I’ve offered up, but it really deserves to be its own thing. When you first start freelancing, you may not be used to thinking of how to create business. Remember that opportunity is everywhere, both in your existing network and with every new contact you make.

Worst Freelance Writing Job

I am looking for an AMERICAN, college-level non-fiction writer to write an ebook + salesletter + extra materials for me. I’ve hired many people for similar positions in the past, and have failed to ever find anyone who is truly worthy of my tasks. I am a nice person, but I am sick of working with underachieving people….

You MUST work while under pressure, while sick, etc. I really cannot accept excuses. If you car breaks down, if your children are sick, etc. — I can’t deal wtih it….

You MUST ALSO BE ABLE TO communicate with me within 24 hours of each of the emails I send you. I hate waiting for people and I consider it NOT accountable to not check your email and response within 24 hours.

You must never plaigiarize any material, but know how to re-write material and write it with SPECIFICS….

I need you to be able to turn stuff over within 1 month of hiring you.

For this project(s), You need to write.
1.) A 60-120 page ebook (25,000 – 50,000 words) (this will be the bulk of the project)
2.) IN addition to the ebook, I will also need you to write up some additional content that I can bundle with the package for a ‘deluxe’ version. This info must be VERY quality info that people will want to purchase as an upsell….

P.S. …I need someone who can give this product specific love and care. I’d prefer if this was your ONLY project for the month.

Maybe this buyer needs to brush up on on rules regarding employer vs client status, or a good old fashioned reality check at least. It doesn’t sound like they have much respect for freelancers as the business owners and professionals we are. But that’s okay. You can get the abuse and unrealistic expectations all at the low, low rate of $500 – $1,000, depending on the bid! If this doesn’t make you run screaming away, maybe this isn’t the blog for you. And really, when will clients realize they don’t get to make absurd demands if they can’t afford to pay for them. In this case a serious sales letter alone would exceed their budget coming from someone qualified to do what they’re asking. The sad thing? People really respect their own work so little that they’re applying for this freelance writing job!

  1. I was – what’s that descriptive? – gobsmacked when I read the worst post of the week. Where the heck do you find these? Talk about having the Scrooged holiday spirit…

  2. I believe that one was an Elance gem.

  3. Gobsmacked is probably the best term I could come up with without devolving into profanity.
