I'm writing in early January on my Make a Living Writing blog about the rate I think freelance writers should aim for...and it's not a low hourly rate! I turned in my last article for '09 on Monday and I am outta here! I try to take at least 4 weeks a year. What's the point of being a freelancer if you can't get more vacation than your bad old employer gave you? :-) And as you point out, if your rate won't cover a week or two off, it's time to raise it.
