Well, we’re about to come to the end of a decade. I don’t know if you’re busy, but I’ve actually landed a new client who contacted me out of the blue. The holidays aren’t always a time to rest on your laurels, although I hope that most of you are taking a well-deserved break. Me, I’ve been seeking out some freelance writing jobs. Even though it’s a slow time of year, there are some decent gigs. Check these out.

The Freelance Writing Jobs

  1. Men’s Lifestyle Writer – are you based in NYC? If so, and you feel comfortable writing about a variety of topics under the heading of men’s lifestyle, then this is definitely a great gig for you to check out. You’ll be writing a short article / blog post every Monday – Friday. Send an email with writing samples that are relevant. – Pay is approximately $1500 per month –they’re also looking for per-piece freelance writers.
  2. Medical writer – a freelance medical writer is needed to help write a series of articles that clock in at around 1,500 words per piece. Applying is very easy; just send in two relevant clips and a brief bio. Pay is $750 with a $200 retainer. They don’t note how many pieces are needed or if pay is per piece or for the whole series, so be sure to check that the compensation is fair.
  3. Architecture/design writer – a very experienced architecture and design writer is needed for a publication on architecture in North Carolina. You must be published more than five times in the past three years as well as have a strong journalism background in architecture and design. Pay is $0.65 per word.
  4. Exam writer – an ACT/SAT prep program needs you to submit original test questions for use in their practice exams. You will need a completed question as well as explanations for both the right and wrong answers in a number of categories, including math, history, mathematics, and science. Pay is $50 per question.

Freelance Writing Job Tip of the Week

Doing my job search this week, I noticed that a lot of freelance workers posted ads for their work on Craigslist. Although it might be tempting to join them, please understand that Craigslist is not built for services needed so much as services sought. Not only that, but it’s a terrible venue to show off your platform. Build your portfolio and show off there instead. Not only will you land more gigs, but you won’t look desperate and you won’t waste your time.

Worst Freelance Writing Job

Hello. I am looking for a NON-PROFESSIONAL writer that is willing to write about photos of adult activities. These photos will be graphic, so you need to be above 18 to do this job. Be prepared to send me a sample when I reply to your email. This will pay per post, and after I read your sample, we will discuss details. Email xxxxxxxx for further details.

Let me be perfectly clear–there is nothing wrong with doing sexy, erotic, or pornographic writing as a freelance writer. If that’s something you’re good at and you’re comfortable with it, I say go for it. Fair compensation is the name of the game, after all. What is degrading is being asked to write captions on a pay-per-post basis for someone who clearly doesn’t want to shell out for any sort of copy. Am I surprised? Hardly. Disgusted, however? Absolutely. Even if it’s erotic writing, there’s still always room for professionalism, and this guy displays none of it. A big hat tip goes out to Brian Orelli, who pointed me to this little gem.

It was on Craigslist. Honest. I don’t go trolling for these things.

I especially like the NON-PROFESSIONAL writer part.

  2. I’m always leery when someone says they want a “sample” up front, especially when (like in this case) they say they won’t even discuss details until they have that. If the client won’t discuss details, they’re probably not worth talking to in the first place. That said, when these kinds of requests are tied to erotic writing ads, I tend to get the feeling that there’s something a bit more skeezy going on.
