Happy New Year! What are your resolutions? Mine is to bring you more and more quality freelance writing jobs. I sure hope you like the first batch of the year!

The Freelance Writing Jobs

  1. Craigslist ad writer - Are you a guru at getting hits from Craigslist? A clothier needs your help in posting an effective and compelling ad. To apply for this job, send an email with some of your best copy written specifically for an internet audience in mind. Pay is $50 for the ad.
  2. IT journalist – Based in the Middle East or in Asia? A British-based marcomms company would like to hire you as their freelance IT journalist. To apply, click the link to make a bid on Elance. Rate is $40-$50 per hour.
  3. Video game walkthrough writer – Are you a gamer? If you love to play video games and are familiar with them, maybe you should consider this gig. You can write walkthroughs for specific games, and Mahalo.com will pay you for them. If you don’t know what a walkthrough is, then it’s best to skip this gig–hardcore gamers only. To apply, you’ll need to join Mahalo.com. Pay is $75-$200 per walkthrough plus ad revenue.
  4. B2B writer – BG+H publishing is looking for some talented and experienced freelance writers to help them with articles for two of their main publications. You would have a two-week window from the time of your assignment to put together an assignment. You must have one year minimum of business-to-business writing experience. Email your resume and two samples to apply. Pay is $100 per 625 word article, $125 per 725 word article.

Freelance Writing Job Tip of the Week

What’s good for the goose is not always good for the gander. I see a lot of freelance writers who post their services on Craigslist, often spamming in multiple cities. This might seem like a good idea–let me disabuse you of that notion right now, because spam is spam–but let me ask you a question. When you want something, do you look for it, or do you ask for it? If you’re like most people, you ask for it, and that’s why posting your service on Craigslist is just going to waste your time. Spend the 20 minutes you’d spend posting why you’re awesome in a cover letter instead.

Worst Freelance Writing Job

NBC New York is seeking a writer who can contribute 2 articles each weekday. Applicants should be able to bring their own voice and analysis to the news of the day, find their own stories, and write stories assigned to them. Please send clips/blog posts along with a description of your work experiences.

Doesn’t seem so bad right? Well, actually, the compensation is only $15 a post “based on experience” which usually means that’s not the rate you’re going to be getting. So you’re expected to be a journalist but for the low, low rate of $15 per article at best. Why is this the worst gig of the week? Well, look who you’d be working for. I think NBC, even with some of GE’s prior financial woes, can afford to pay you better. I hope that this is not actually affiliated with them because if it is, this is insultingly low for a respected news organization. You should always bear your customer’s needs and resources in mind–because if you’re getting hosed, you’re getting hosed.

  1. Hi Jenn –

I saw that NBC ad and was likewise horrified. What the heck is that about! Even AOL pays $50 in many of its areas.

But it can’t top my favorite ad of the day, from the co-CEO of the review company Seventeen Years: http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/wrg/1537683582.html

Key sentence: “Recently we have had a decrease in writers available to our company because of certain legal issues with a few of our employees.”

ROTFL!!! Yes, I want to get a job with a company so heinous that a) a substantial number of their writers are suing them (or are perhaps recently busted illegal immigrants?) and b) they’re stupid enough to disclose that fact in their ads!

  2. LOL Yeah, I saw that ad this morning and thought it was an awfully strange way to try to attract writers. I’m not sure what their legal issues with past writers are, but it certainly doesn’t make me think “sure, I’d love to work for you!”

I have a feeling the NBC one isn’t through NBC directly, but probably through an affiliate station or something, looking for someone to update their website. That’s certainly no excuse for the pay rate though, especially given that they’re not just looking for a writer or blogger, but someone who’s going to scout the stories and basically serve as analyst as well.
