Let’s talk about something a little different today. Rather than discussing the business of being a successful freelance writer, let’s talk about taking a break. Pull up a chair, pour a glass of wine, and kick back as you enjoy any one of these movies about writers. Make it your weekend mission.
- His Girl Friday – Probably my favorite writer-related film, this classic has a journalism tilt.
- Shakespeare in Love – Who doesn’t love a little Shakespeare?
- Agatha Christie: A Life in Pictures — A great bio-pic if you’re a mystery buff like I am.
- Capote — Writing has ethical dilemmas? Who would have guessed? Here’s another true story for you.
- The Singing Detective — Okay, so this is technically a mini-series, but it’s outstanding, so watch it anyway (another one for the mystery / crime buffs).
I know there are a lot more, but these are some of my personal favorites. Why don’t you add to the list and tell us what your favorite writing-related or writer-realted films are?
On a sidenote, I also have to admit that I’m a huge Murder, She Wrote fan. Yes, it’s corny, but I can’t get enough of it. It’s one of very few tv series where I can watch the episodes repeatedly, and it definitely qualfies as brain candy. So if you’re not quite in the mood for a feature-length film, pop in a DVD (or Netflix’ watch instantly for that matter) and give Jessica Fletcher a go.

Two of my favorite movies are about writers: Wonder Boys and Adaptation. I guess When Harry Met Sally technically qualifies too, since Sally was a journalist. Oh, and you can’t forget Stand By Me.
My favorite writer related movies are on tv every now and then and star Wendy Crewson as Joanne Kilbourn (based on Gail Bowen series) an ex-cop, novelist, professor, and all around sleuth. There are about six films in all.
Secret Window with Johnny Depp is also an entertaining one.
I forgot about Secret Window, but yes, that one’s worth seeing too.
I just saw Julie and Julia, so we can add that to my list. I was afraid I’d find it dull, but it kept my attention. Not only was it appealing on the blogger front, but the whole “turning 30″ (I will in less than a month) and “very tall chick” (I’m 6′ tall) aspects appealed to me as well since they were both very personally relevant.
LOVE The Singing Detective! Such a strange concept, yet so freakin’ memorable. I’m a Michael Gambon fan for life.
