Freelance Writing Jobs – January 19th, 2010

By on January 19th, 2010

This week’s freelance writing jobs are an odd crop. Basically, if you want regular work and you’re a sports writer in New Jersey, this is your banner week. For the rest of us, well, maybe it’s not quite as fruitful. But fear not–your friendly neighborhood gig getter isn’t going to ever leave you without a lead or two.

The Freelance Writing Jobs

  1. Jersey City sports writer – do you know and love Jersey City high school/college sports? This is the gig for you! If you have photography skills, all the better–you can get paid an additional amount just for submitting one with your article. One article per week required. To apply, submit a resume and your best sample of sports writing. This gig pays $.25 per word plus $10 for a photo.
  2. High school sports writer – if the previous gig sounded nice but you’re more into high school sports, then check this one out instead. Basking Ridge Patch is looking for freelancers to cover games in central and northern New Jersey. To apply, they request that you send an email with a description of your writing experience. This gig pays $50+ per article plus photos.
  3. Academic editor – a native Spanish speaker needs a strong editor to look over their academic work for accuracy, grammar, and composition. Workload tends to be biweekly with required phone contact to discuss assignments. Interested parties can apply via the ad but have three references handy. This project pays $200 – $500 per work (usually 3-5 pages) based on experience.
  4. Art writer – if you’ve got a passion for art and an art history background, this is a great job for you. Primarily you’d be working on artist profiles, blurbs, and press releases. To apply, send in your resume and a few of your best clips related to art. This gig pays $20 per 150-170 words.
  5. Copywriter – macauHR is looking for an experienced copywriter to help update their website’s marketing and promotional materials. The work will mainly be brochures, press kits, and flyers. To apply, bid on this gig on Elance and include some of your best samples. This gig pays between $40-$50 per hour depending on your bid.
  6. White paper writer – an IT services company is looking for a white paper writer to produce quality papers for their firm. For this gig, you must have some experience with networking analysis and should be able to produce applications and solutions for the product. To apply, head to Elance–I would recommend including a strong proposal. This gig pays between $1,000 and $5,000 depending on your bid.

Freelance Writing Job Tip of the Week

We only publish gigs with a stated rate of compensation, but that doesn’t mean that you should only apply for jobs that publish. In fact, some very awesome positions don’t indicate a rate of compensation or–even better–ask you what you’d like to be paid. Don’t be afraid to apply for these jobs!

Worst Gig of the Week

———- is a leading publisher in the business, finance, real estate, and hospitality areas. We are searching for freelance writers who are able to review English books and are able to write honest reviews of 1-3 paragraphs. We will pay $50 for the entire project of ALL 3 reviews upon completion. We make payments via PayPal ONLY. If you do not want to be paid via PayPal, please do not respond.

**If you have done book reviews with us in the past we will not be able to re-hire you at this time.

So basically they want you to read books you’d normally never read (that is why they pay you in the first place) and then produce three reviews. This would be a bad enough gig if they wanted you to write nine paragraphs for only $50, which would clock in below our $.10 per word rate minimum on this blog. But no, they actually want you to read three entire books first. This is a ripoff in the truest sense of the word.

Also, always be suspicious of any company that doesn’t rehire its previous freelancers without good reason. Always.
