Freelance Writing Jobs – February 16th, 2010

By on February 16th, 2010

Even though yesterday I exposed the innards of my operation, I’m still ticking along. Of course I’m still posting freelance writing jobs every Tuesday. Do you think I’d give up something I love doing just because you know how to do it too? Here’s some stuff that you may have missed.

The Freelance Writing Jobs

  1. Shecky’s reporter – if you missed out on this gig when it was in Texas, you’ve got your chance if you’re based in Philadelphia. Shecky’s needs someone fashionable, friendly, and witty. To apply, send along a relevant writing clip, a photo, and your resume. Compensation is $100 per night.
  2. Health writer – a SoHo-based health company named Bioprin Posterous is seeking a health writer with a captivating and entertaining voice to post on its blog. To apply, I would recommend sending on your portfolio and a relevant clip, plus your resume. Compensation is $100 per post.
  3. Financial writer – an investment advisory firm in San Francisco is looking for a freelance writer/editor. They also would be potentially interested in freelancers who can find illustrations as well for the article. I would recommend sending samples of both editing and original content. Compensation is $50 – $100 per article.
  4. Social networking copywriter – a startup social network is looking for a copywriter to help ensure quality in copy as well as produce a compelling description for the site. This is on Elance, so put together a strong bid proposal with samples of copy you have written, or even consider doing a custom sample. Compensation is based on bid on Elance between $1,000 to $5,000 for this project with a potential for future projects.
  5. Print marketing writer – a writer with experience being published in magazines or trade publications is needed for a new project. The ideal candidate would be edgy, witty, and even funny. For your bid, be sure to include clips of previous work and a strong proposal for what you would do. Compensation is based on bid on Elance–a fair rate of compensation would be at least $800.
  6. Corporate reputation writer – for this project, a writer is needed to turn a recent presentation into an article. Unfortunately, the client did not indicate how long the article is, so be sure to bid based on your experience with the topic for a fair rate of compensation. You can contact the client as well if you need to. Compensation is based on bid on Elance between $500 and $1000.
  7. Costa Rica book writer – if you have either lived there or have extensive experience there, this is the ideal job for you to bid on. This client wants a dynamic book based more on experiences than a straightforward travel guide. The page count is not clear, but you can ask prior to bidding. Compensation is based on bid on Elance between $10,000 to $25,000.

Freelance Writing Job Tip of the Week

Other freelancers are not your competition. I remember starting out as a writer asking a friend of mine to keep an eye out for gigs, and he actually flat refused because he felt like I’d be hurting his chances of getting a job. It turned out that he was starting to freelance as well, and he didn’t want to lose out on an opportunity. Not only is that bad for friendship (yes, he has since been removed from my Facebook and speed dial) but it’s bad for business. Jenn has hammered at this point before but it bears repeating–not only is collaborating good for you as it opens you up to new opportunities, but if you get swamped, you have a ready list of alternatives to send a client to. You’re not an island!

Worst Gig of the Week

Looking to hire a couple writers for 40-60 pages a week. You will be working with one of the finest term paper writing boutiques based out of NYC. Must be willing to take on 40-60 pages. Must be able to write academic papers quickly and adequately. We are looking for B- material, not genius material. Paying $12/page to start. Increase after 60 pages. Let me know if this is the right job for you. Telecommuting is okay, but must be very very accessible. We are looking for the finest writers who are looking for some extra cash on the side. Email us a resume, cover letter and a short blurb about what you do. Save the pretentiousness :)

You can consider this your bonus tip of the week rolled into this worst freelance writing job of the week, but any time a potential client comes off like a jerk in the ad, do NOT apply unless you’re ready to work for a verbally abusive person who considers himself your boss instead of your client. Not only that, but you can clearly see that this particular client doesn’t seem to give a damn about their work or what they do, so why should you? Rate notwithstanding, skip stuff like this. It’s a waste of your time.

  1. Star says:

Thanks for sticking with passing on only semi-decent paying jobs. Not all people do this. I don’t go to sites that are affiliated with, or propagate, the exploitive stuff.

  2. Rebecca says:

I think you missed a key point on the “worst” gig this week. Writing for one of the “one of the finest term paper writing boutiques” is, at least according to this education professional, highly unethical. Who cares if you’re helping a kid cheat his way through college when he obviously doesn’t have what it takes so long as you can earn a few bucks? Wait – maybe the term papers are for entertainment purposes only…LOL

  3. Clint Osterholz says:

@Star – Thanks! I am really glad to be part of this. I’m happy to hear that you like it too.

@Rebecca – I had actually meant to address that, but I was so angry about the smarmy attitude that I failed to do so. Thanks for picking up my slack!

  4. @Rebecca – But if we don’t help them cheat their way through school, where will the next generation of no-skill, no-subject-matter-knowledge $.0000001 per word Web content writers come from???

  5. I am ashamed to say when I started freelance writing that I wrote for one of those academic papaer companies. There are many things that they do not tell you, like how often they pay and I had to wait months for payment, and I felt REALLY bad and so I quit and never did it again. I drank underage too, I got over that too!
