I've had this same experience, Rebecca; very recently in fact. Running a business full-time, marketing my services and caring for four kids doesn't leave me a lot of time for people wasting my time because they want a guaranteed blueprint for easy writing success.

There is quite a bit of FREE information out there if people would take the time to investigate and do a bit of research (valuable skills for freelance writers, don't you think?).

That said, I don't mind answering questions from those who are getting started and are putting forth a real effort.

Great post, Rebecca. Since I started offering paid mentoring services, I've discovered that plenty of people want free advice...but the serious few will pay a mentor and work on really building a career.

So my answer now is sure, if you hire me to work with you, I'll be happy to not only tell you generally how I do what I do, but craft a plan tailored for your situation, interests and life experience.

Otherwise, I'll answer a brief, specific question or two...but then it's time to get serious about it. Or read my free blogs. Maybe we could syndicate a column in the paper like Dear Abby? But until then, I can't answer everyone's questions about how I do it. And how I do it might not work for you anyway--each person's success path is shaped by who they are. For instance, I love in-person networking, but if you're petrified of it, just doing what I do is not going to work.

I love working with my mentees...and not being nibbled to death by people who aren't serious about making a real career from writing.
