Freelance Writing Job Tip of the Week
I am currently exercising more than I ever have in my life. I am doing the P90X program and let me tell you, it is kicking my ass. I am so tired. But I am doing such an awesome job and I’ve seen changes and muscle gains more than I have ever seen in my life. Why? I have a buddy. I have a friend who pokes me in the eye when I don’t stay on top of it. Having that outside motivation has really helped me, not just when I’ve been tired, but also when I’ve been insecure about gains I have made. For some people, freelancing is like exercising. It helps to have someone to give you a little perspective.

What’s so bad about this? Well, it turns out that the budget on this project is $20 an hour. Anyone who wants to pay you that much after requiring a minimum of six years’ schooling wants to have their cake and then make sure that you don’t have enough money to get your own cake. I hope that if you have specialized training of that sort that you charge a premium for it, because you certainly paid enough to get it.

LOL at $20 an hour for 6 years of education. Would you be shocked to learn that teachers are paid $20 an hour after 6 or more years of education when they are asked/forced to teach tutorials or do something extra after school? What’s really funny is how many are desperate for the opportunity to earn “that much” teaching summer school, etc…
Do they at least offer decent benefits w/ a teaching job though? Still terrible given what’s required of you folks, but probably a bit better than the same rate freelancing. Then again, didn’t you know teachers are supposed to just put up w/ it out of sheer concern for the kiddies? Man, you ask for a lot. ;)
Teachers generally get rather poor benefits. Personally I’ve paid over $700 a month to cover a family of four on very, very basic medical coverage. I had far better benefits working for corporations. The only true benefit I get teaching that I can’t get for the same price freelancing is maternity care. But I don’t need that anymore, so it’s really a wash. And I do, personally, put up with it for the kiddos. I took a huge paycut to teach when I left the corporate world and another $3000 cut to change districts this year. Unfortunately this isn’t true for all teachers in the industry. :(
Awwww… you don’t want to have another little giant? :( Sorry to hear teaching can suck on the benefits front so badly. Do you at least get most of the summer off to spend time with the kids while they’re off (or when they’ll be in school at least)? Hopefully freelancing helps fill in the gaps.

I saw a similar ad for someone with a law degree to write on employment law-$20/hr. They had the warning to not even apply if you did not have that degree! It showed up on the job listings for a long time. Hmmm…I wonder why it wasn’t snatched up.
lol At some lawyer’s rates, I wonder how many words $20 would actually buy you!
Here’s one I just saw & commented on at Anne Wayman’s:
White Paper on Health Care Bill. I thought-wow-right up my alley. Then I get to the compensation-per word for 8-10 page white paper but max project fee-$100.
Are you kidding me?!
lol Was that for a bidding site by any chance? The sad thing is that rate would be considered decent by some when it comes to a similar length of content. But a white paper should absolutely be higher — much, much, much, MUCH higher. Ads like that demonstrate the client doesn’t really understand the true value of the project they’re asking to have completed. And if they don’t understand the real potential value to their business or site, then that screams “nightmare client” to me. That’s the kind of situation where I’d tell a new writer that if they’re that desperate to get a portfolio piece, they’d be better off writing a similar paper for free for a respected nonprofit — always better than working for low pay for a probably no-name client.
It was a Craigslist ad in SF Bay area-here is part of what it said:
We’re looking for an experienced analyst / wordsmith to make sense of the health care bill. We will pay a per project fee for a qualified writer to put some hard work into summarizing the bill in an 8-10 page white paper. We have a strong preference for individuals with a background in Sociology, Policy Research, Health Care, or statistical analysis…As you can see, this report will include a lot of information, but it’s important that you are succinct and clear in your prose. Think of it as a detailed study done by a respected think tank, but produced for the average consumer.
LOL!!! Like the 2,000+ Health care bill is simple reading!
Copyrights Make Sense! Often More Sense Than Creative Commons
LOL I was having the same thought while reading the ad. Pay doesn’t even begin to cover the reading / research time nonetheless writing a white paper. Sheesh!
