If there’s one thing that rubs me the wrong way (and okay, there are many), it’s when people make dead-wrong assumptions about me. That happens a lot when discussions of content mills come up. People assume they know my full opinions based on a quick tweet. They assume I’m “out of touch” with what it’s like to get started (bullshit — I help writers who are just starting pretty much every day and am very in touch with what it’s like, not to mention why it’s often like it is). They also sometimes assume I don’t know anything about mills and networks so I have no right to comment (couldn’t be further from the truth, and it’s always ironic since that’s coming from people bashing my ideas admitting they haven’t gotten to that level yet so they can’t speak to both fairly). Yeah. It bugs me.
I have all of the information right here on this site to help people get started. I released an e-book on the subject for Web writers which some of them treat like their career bible for goodness sake. And I help people individually almost whenever they ask me — my policy is simple: I won’t hold your hand through the process, but if you’re willing to work hard to help yourself then I’m willing to take time out of my busy schedule to help you too.
And still, people like to assume that if I consider something a bad business decision it must mean I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about. So enough already. I’ve helped a lot of people privately. Now I’m willing to step up and work with someone more publicly. I’ll be much more hands-on in the process of showing you what to do. In exchange, you would agree to let me document what you’re doing and how you’re progressing. And you agree to put real work into following the instructions to make change happen.
Does that sound like you? If you’re currently working for content mills or residual earning sites and you either think they’re a great deal because you haven’t been able to get significantly better (consistently) or you know they’re a bad deal in general but you need help getting out of the rut, email me.
I’ll be choosing one person to coach completely. I’ll directly help you setup a website if you don’t have one (or help you improve the one you do have). I’ll give you networking “assignments” or goals to work towards to keep yourself visible for referrals. If gigs happen to come to me that I can’t take on, and they happen to be in your specialty area, I’ll even refer work to you directly as a member of my network. I’ll even help you look at ways you can branch into additional income streams that will help you through any slow periods you might face with clients.
What I won’t do is hire your personally, pitch prospective clients for you, or go out scouting leads for you. I’m here to show you how to use your platform and your network to build a significantly more rewarding career than mill work or focusing on 3rd party residual earnings.
I’m currently working with another writer in a somewhat similar capacity as a “guinea pig” helping me develop the material for the e-course series that will eventually be launched here on All Freelance Writing. This particular case is about more personal attention — a focus on how to make my experience work for you rather than just presenting it and having you adapt it on your own.
Are you interested in stepping up and working for something better? If you’re currently earning all or most of your income from content mills and you’d like me to consider personally helping you improve your freelance writing career, send an email to jenn@allfreelancewriting.com. Make sure you include all of the following information to help me narrow down the choices and find someone who sounds like a good fit for this project. (Note: AFW writers or any other writers who personally work for me on any of my other sites are not eligible. Sorry. It wouldn’t be ethical to portray you as an example if a part of that income is coming directly from me rather than from the advice and resulting work you’re doing to land new clients.)
Current Income: (you can be a bit broad if you’re more comfortable)
Full-time or part-time?
Avg pay per article (since we’re talking about mill writers, this will revolve around Web content writing)
Desired pay per article
Specialty area (niche or type of writing if you have a specialty — if you don’t have one yet, list some possibilities such as your degree area or favorite hobbies you know a lot about)
Do you currently have a website? Include the link if you do.
Where are you located? (just the country is fine)
What mill(s) do you work for now?
Do you have a Paypal account? (I’d prefer to work with someone using Paypal. That’s because if anything I “assign” you to do during the coaching program involves an up front cost to you, I don’t expect you to spend money on it just on my say-so. I’ll pay for it, by directly sending you the Paypal funds so you can handle all of the transactions in your own name without having to spend your own money. I know my methods work. They’ve worked with countless other colleagues before. And unlike being paid to promote a method to you, I’m instead prepared to put my money where my mouth is.)
Some of the application details will be a part of the public post / tracking. So use general figures please (I won’t share your overall income and clearly won’t share your Paypal details, but I will share the amount per article, goal, and how we have you progress towards that goal). Remember, by applying you’re agreeing to have this information shared on this blog for the benefit of others in exchange for the free one-on-one coaching.
If you have any questions before applying, let me know by emailing me or leaving a comment here if you think it’s relevant to others. I’ll choose someone probably early next week.

Woohoo, Jenn, that’s a fabulous offer for freelance writers. Just thought I’d leave my two cents here as definitely one of those writers that calls your ebook my career bible! If you want to take your business more seriously, you definitely want to take Jenn up on this offer.
Damn, Jenn delivers once again.
This is a fantastic opportunity for any writer. Seriously guys, if you’re reading this and are unsure about what Jenn is saying – STOP MESSING AROUND AND SEND HER AN E-MAIL!!
Haha. I work with such ass-kissers. ;) j/k
We have a few submissions already, so definitely get your emails in. I’m going to schedule the pick for either Monday or when I have 20 applications received, whichever comes first.
From the ones I’ve already taken a look at I can say it’s going to be a very difficult choice. I have people getting in touch who have some serious credentials in very big money industries making absurdly little money for their work. My first reaction on looking at some of these is “she could be earning a minimum of 10 times this much per piece,” and in a couple of cases it’s already clear what’s holding the individual back (or at least playing a major role). For an experiment, this is already extremely interesting stuff. And based on some of this, I’ll probably continue with a post series directed to some of these scenarios that others might be facing too, even if the person doesn’t end up being the one I work with one-on-one.
So go ahead and send that email. Whether or not it ends up being you picked in a few days, there’s a good chance you’ll still get some tailored suggestions to your personal situation. :)
We’ve been getting a lot of submissions, and I’ve narrowed down my top picks of the ones received. I’m going to leave things open for applications until noon (eastern) on Friday of this week. Then I’ll announce my final pick shortly after that time.
I apologize for cutting it short, but we’ve gotten some really amazing applications in so far and with my promise to address as many as I can at least in post form I need to limit this before it gets out of hand.
After the “guinea pig” is chosen for this project and announced, I’ll contact anyone else to see if you’re interested in having me share some of your story along with some personalized suggestions in a post so others can benefit as well.
