Freelance Writing Jobs – May 4th, 2010

By on May 4th, 2010

I’m pretty unhappy with that bright yellow orb that sticks up in the big blue ceiling all day, and I don’t know what its purpose is. I’m convinced that it’s sinister. As a typical cynical East Coaster with six months’ worth of nasty gray sky, I don’t handle spring well. I think I’d enjoy it more if people didn’t have to bitch about the heat, the pollen, and the fact that the sun has returned. Rather than get a sunburn, let’s get onto the freelance writing jobs.

The Freelance Writing Jobs

  1. Creative writer – do you like to write brochures and web content while remaining creative? This would be an ideal job for you. You’d be doing some technical writing but they need some creative flair too. I would send along some clips of your best creative writing, since that’s what they’re asking for. This freelance writing job pays $750 for the project.
  2. Infographic script writer – do you like to work with strange topics? Do you love infographics? If you have some great ideas, this would be a great gig for you to take. You’d need to make about 3 – 5 scripts per week. This freelance writing job pays $50 per script.
  3. Web design writer – what do you know about web design? If you can answer that question with a LOT, then you should try applying for this job. You need to be an expert–amateurs and researchers need not apply. This freelance writing job pays $150 per article.

Freelance Writing Job Tip of the Week

I talked about cold calls a few weeks ago but have you ever done any cold emailing? It isn’t as effective, but it can work in certain fields (I’m thinking grant writing) where you have a harder time getting good jobs. If you have a favorite website, magazine, periodical, newspaper, or basically anything that’s written down, send them an email with your rates and a strong proposal of what you’d like to do for them. You’d actually be surprised how effective it can be. But don’t get discouraged. Cold calls are rarely returned, and cold emails doubly so.

Worst Freelance Writing Job of the Week

Do you love your household appliances? Do you relish comparing features and functions when you shop for a new household gadget ? Do you secretly long to get every last attachment for your Kitchen Aid Mixer? If you stay up late watching infomercials on the latest small appliances and really know how they operate, then we have a writing gig for you. LoveToKnow is a fabulous content provider, seeking a freelance writer to create web articles and slideshows on topics pertaining to household appliances on an ongoing basis. LoveToKnow is a fast-growing content site with useful articles in channels devoted to a variety of popular topics. Pay is per article (generally $20 for a 650+ word article) and work is part-time, but we ask writers to commit to creating up to 20 articles per month.

Wow! Not only can you make less than five cents a word but you have to commit to creating tons of content! Well then that means you’d get a huge paycheck, right? Of course, if you like to work at less than a normal rate. That, and you have to watch infomercials on kitchen appliances. Awesome!

Seriously. Don’t ever sign on for something like this unless you get a good rate out of it. If you flake out on something cheap like this, they’ll trash your reputation. So be careful taking on jobs like this, especially if they seem like a reasonable ‘for now’ job.
