In a thread yesterday about business bank accounts, we mentioned accounting software options for freelance writers.

I mentioned that I am setting up Quicken Home & Business for the personal side of things and PeachTree Accounting for my business accounting software in the near future. Evelyn Lafont mentioned Outright.com as another option.

Accounting is anything but my strong suit, but getting a more formal accounting system in place is a big goal of mine this year. I wasn't in love with QuickBooks when I used it in the past, so I'm giving PeachTree a chance this time around. I chose it because I needed something that could handle accounting not just for freelance services but multiple divisions of my base company (which covers writing services, Web publishing, and an imprint for book and e-book publishing this year).

What accounting software do you use or recommend? Are you looking to upgrade to something more robust? Do you keep your books manually?

So far I've been using my own Excel spreadsheet for accounting. Initially, I didn't find a need for Quicken or the like, but I have been considering getting software like the Big Girl companies. Wink I'll be interested to hear the Pros and Cons of the various systems.

I haven't used any of them long enough to give you a good list of benefits compared to others yet. But here are some comparisons that might help.

Quickbooks vs Quicken

Peachtree vs Quickbooks

Hope that helps!

Another quick note, I went with Peachtree 2011 Premium (not the new 2012 version). The latest version has too many bad reviews. These financial programs seem to be getting released with far too many bugs still present this year, so I stuck with 2011 for both of them. Amazon had a great deal on Peachtree (not sure if they still do). I'd just say to carefully read reviews for specific versions if you're thinking about buying one. One year to the next, opinions can change pretty drastically as features are added and stripped.
