For some of us, freelancing means rolling out of bed and into the work day at home. For others, freelancing means working late at night when the kids head to bed. And many others fall somewhere in between.
Each can pose its own challenges as far as being able to focus and get our work finished. Let's talk about what gets each of us through our work days today, no matter when or where we happen to work.
Personally, I work best during the early morning hours. That means getting up around 4 or 4:30am, starting work at 5, and ending by noon. That's my ideal day. It doesn't always work out that way, especially with the recent move and me adapting to another person's schedule in the house. Regardless, I'm a morning worker. I'm totally fried through the afternoon, so I get a limited number of hours to be productive. If that doesn't happen, I have to get back to work in the evening when I get a second wind (and I hate working in the evenings, so I try to avoid it).
Here are some of the things that help me get through the day on a productive note:
- Coffee (at least three big cups on a good morning)
- B12 (whenever I need a kick I take a sublingual B12 supplement and it helps me perk back up; that's on top of a daily multi each morning)
- Breakfast (whether it's eggs, a greek yogurt, or something else, I find a protein-rich breakfast can make the difference between a good day and a lousy one)
Yoga used to be a big one for me too, but honestly I can't remember the last time I was early enough to squeeze in a workout before work. Given how achy I feel most mornings though, a good stretch is probably in order. The focus now is getting me back to some semblance of normalcy with my early wake-ups. Once that schedule's back under control, I'll probably work yoga back into the mix most mornings.
That's what works for me. What about you?

My kitties and the hubster. We are all together all day, everyday. The ability to stop what I'm doing and lay down for a kitty cuddle when I'm getting a lot of soft kitten headbutts is priceless, as is the ability to have a conversation with my hubs at any time–or go out for a walk on the beach or piece of shitty pizza any time.
Not only does this help me get through the day, but it also is an ever-present chill pill. When I start getting crabby about my workload, the reasons for my self-employment are right in front of me, fuzzy, warm and purry (all three of 'em) and I have to quit the bitchin' because I still remember what it was like to have to leave them for 10 hours a day.
EDIT: Also, my Keurig helps and I eat reasonably well (veg, fruit and limited processed foods).

Ah yes. How dare I forget kitty cuddles. I have four of the little beasties. My girl almost always spends the day in the office with me. She thinks I have the big chair and ottoman just for her — the ottoman is like a super-duper kitty bed.
Also, I like the way you can insert "eating reasonably well" and "shitty pizza" in the same comment.
The stress relief side of things is a good point. Lately I go outside and do yardwork (living in the woods means there are always leaves to clean up if I need an excuse to be outside). I'm looking forward to spring because I'll be able to turn my attention to gardening when I need that bit of fresh air.

Lol, I did say "reasonably" ;-)
Speaking of outside work, I washed windows on Tuesday afternoon, which was harrowing because I am deathly afraid of bugs and in Florida, there are always bugs. What got me through that was knowing that eventually, I would be back INSIDE at my bug-free computer soon.

Oh, I'm with you. I hate bugs. The exterminator comes seasonally (because we're in the woods and we'd be bombarded with them if he didn't). So usually we're okay. Our big thing in this area is the stink beetle infestation that started a few years back. Those things creep me out.

Since I am still working a day job in order to make this my eventually full-time, I can say self-identity is what gets me through. I tend to throw it right out there that I am a writer getting another paycheque. Its like a shot of adrenaline, instantly…

When you tell new prospects that, or when people ask what you do for a living? Or does it not really matter when so much as embracing the position you're in right now?

I pick and choose when and if I will tell new prospects that I have the day job, but I am telling them less and less. With any writing I have done on legal research, that is when it gets important to mention the day job since my prospects increase. At the day job it will often come up what I define as my "real" job and thats when I get the adrenaline shot. I went to college for the day job, but it was a means to a living long before I stepped up my freelance practice increase.
I have tried to embrace the job I have now but it is difficult. I prefer to embrace the here and now, the moment itself of being in the present. I remind myself of my writing identity, and that the day job is a stepping stone to greater things.

Thank you. A colleague/friend who works as a motivational speaker and recovering stand-up comic put it brilliantly in an e-mail to me last night.
"you definitely sound like you're living as though you're a full-time writer (as
much as possible!) which is how one puts intention in motion so keep on keepin'
on!"

Lately, I have been snacking constantly (healthy snacks)'to keep going, and also (this is weird) brushing my teeth. Brushing my teeth, and using my fave mouthwash, makes me feel refreshed, haha. It's odd, but it could be worse. Since I had to give up coffee I have to do something lol
