Author and Book Media Kit Components – What Should You Include?

This item was filed under [ Book Writing, Marketing ]

Today let’s very briefly go over some common components of the author (or book) media kit – in other words, what you should include. While most of these will work for a hard copy media kit / press kit, let’s focus on online author media kits (those in newsroom formats on your website or downloadable [...]

First Drafts: It’s OK if They Suck

This item was filed under [ Book Writing ]

So I’ve passed the 10% mark on my novel first draft. I know the writing is far from my best. And the further I go along, the more comfortable I am with that.
For example, right now I have a lot of “he said” / “she said” stuff going on with my quotes. I know the [...]

Week 2 of Novel Drafting – Getting into a Routine

This item was filed under [ Book Writing ]

Last week was a little disappointing in my first draft efforts, and for a moment, I thought this week would be equally so. The plan is to stick to a minimum of 2500 words per week, broken over 5 days. I took my two days off early this past week due to some personal issues [...]

I promise, promise, promise that I will [...]

Getting to Know Your Characters

This item was filed under [ Book Writing ]

I’m a big believer in planning. That’s why I went through a thorough outline for the book I’m writing, and why I outline most writing I do (from how-to articles and blog posts to press releases and white papers).
You would think that character sheets, notes, outlines, etc. and then the novel outline itself would be [...]

Working Title Chosen for My Current Novel

This item was filed under [ Book Writing ]

If you followed my previous posts on outlining novels, you might remember that I had working titles in place for the two outlines I completed in 2008–Sarah and Three Weeks. Perhaps oddly, the novel I chose to start drafting this month was the only one without a working title.
I”m happy to say I was finally [...]

Measuring Your Writing Goals

This item was filed under [ Book Writing ]

While drafting my current mystery novel, I’ve set word count goals to keep me focused and chugging along. That basic goal is to write a bare minimum of 500 words per day, five days per week.
So far, so good.
I’ve noticed something though–I find myself struggling to hit that 500 word mark.
Uh oh. My hope what [...]
