Blogger Needed for Post on PR and Blogger Relations – $75

This is just a reminder for a gig I’m personally hiring for (mentioned in our last set of freelance writing jobs). I’ll post the original ad with requirements below. I’ll be choosing the writer on Monday at noon eastern, so please email me your brief pitch asap to be considered (and please follow the instructions below).

AFW writer Jenn Mattern is looking for a freelance writer on blogger relations/PR for a one-off post for a new public relations writing blog. For tone, think edgy. The topic is “Guaranteed Ways to Piss Off Bloggers with Your Press Release.” The writer must have three years’ experience in the PR industry (preferably with some direct blogger relations experience). Pay is $75 an article at around 350 – 5oo words and should be scannable (such as list form). To apply, email jenn@allfreelancewriting.com with a 3 – 5 sentence pitch demonstrating tone and style noted above. Longer pitches will not be considered. Get to the point. Applications will be accepted through the 30th, with a writer chosen as of December 1st.

Welp, this is my last job posting of this type. As you may have read yesterday (and if you didn’t, go here) we’re changing the format of job posts. Personally, I’m pretty excited by it even though I haven’t been doing job postings for very long. I have waded waist deep through links of inferior quality to bring you just what I’ve been able to thus far, so I know I’ve got my work cut out for me. At the same time, a weekly opportunity to rip into a scam artist, a demanding employer, or an outright abusive potential client feels good. So I hope that you’ll appreciate the change!

Freelance Writing Jobs – Your “Get More Gigs” Tip of the Day

Stop trolling job boards for hours each week, and put that time to better use directly pitching your services. Have you seen a company website that could use a good edit? Pitch it (tactfully). Do you think a local company could benefit from a new white paper? Pitch it. Have an idea for an article for your favorite company’s email newsletter? Pitch that too! The best gigs are rarely advertised publicly. The client might not even realize they need to hire a writer or editor until you contact them. Get to it!

Freelance Writing Jobs – Your “Get More Gigs” Tip of the Day

Post your rates online. If you have a professional site, include your rates along with your services. Not only will you weed out inquiries from people who can’t afford you anyway, but you’ll save prospective clients time. Remember, every time you respond and send a quote you’re wasting time that could be put into billable hours or other marketing efforts, especially if your rates are somewhat standard. Don’t waste time sending the same info to several people. Worried you’ll lose flexibility? You won’t! Just post a rate range or average instead (and make that clear on the site). If you want people to hire you, you have to give them the information they need to make that decision between you and the competition.

Freelance Writing Jobs – Your “Get More Gigs” Tip of the Day

One of the best ways to land more freelance writing jobs is to make sure prospective clients are able to find you when they search for writers. Check your professional website’s search engine rankings for your main keyword terms. If you aren’t on the first page of results, work on your SEO (build incoming links, make sure your website content is actually related to your keyword targets, etc.). People are lazy. They rarely search several pages deep into results. You have to rank well if you want to get their attention.

I’m so sad…this is my last job list for y’all. Starting Friday, instead of posting jobs for you guys I’ll be writing a weekly blog post discussing the results of various…experiments that I try.

During the new series I’ll be going undercover to expose the truth about long-held freelance writing beliefs. Gig scoring tip of the day: Ask a friend or associate to proofread your portfolio site and the samples you use to apply for gigs. You know as well as I do that it is really hard to find all of our own mistakes and when you apply for a gig and ask the prospective client to check out your portfolio and samples, you don’t want to risk them seeing your spelling or grammatical errors. Just ask a colleague who you trust to take a quick scan. You can even repay them in kind.
