Have you been following our growing collection of awesome and exclusive free stuff for writers? No? Well then let’s get you caught up with our latest free online too for writers — a simple dual-mode e-book sales conversion calculator.

Why an e-book sales conversion calculator? I don’t know. Because we just finished a 14 day e-book writing challenge here perhaps. Really, you can use the calculator for any type of product you want.

Go check out the tool. There are two versions (click the button at the top of the calculator to switch modes). The first version lets you enter traffic and sales stats to calculate an earnings estimate and sales conversion. The other option lets you choose a conversion rate you want to target, enter an estimate of traffic for the coming month (or week, or whatever you want), and it will tell you how many sales you need to make to reach that goal.

As always, if you have ideas for writer freebies that you’d like us to consider creating or contracting for exclusive release to All Freelance Writing readers, let us know (leave a comment or send an email to jenn@allfreelancewriting.com) and if it’s feasible and fits in with other plans, we just might do it!

It’s time for our next exclusive free WordPress theme release for freelance writers. What does that mean? It means you can only get this theme right here! The design was purchased in full from the designer specially for you! This is a theme from a new designer I haven’t purchased from before, so it’s a little different than what we’ve released in the past. The coder just finished things up, so I hope you like it! If you use it, leave a link in the comments and let us know where it’s being used so we can see it in action.

This theme is more specifically designed to work as a portfolio / professional site. Actually, it’s a combination professional site / blog — something I’ve recently recommended here. Make sure you read all of the information below before downloading.

What’s Included

The coded theme

The .psd files (download those separately here)

Terms

Please remember that all free Web templates and free WordPress themes from All Freelance Writing are made available under the following terms: You’re free to use it on your own sites (and you do not have to include a credit link), but you may NOT distribute this template to others in any way. You cannot forward the files to someone via email. You cannot post the files for download on your own site. You cannot link directly to the download file on this site. If someone else wants it, they must visit this page and download it directly from this site. Also, derivative works made from the template may not be released (in other words, you can’t change the design and then distribute it to others – it’s for use on your own sites only).

Screenshot / Demo

You can view a temporary demo site at FadMarketing.com to see the theme in action.

JBlog: Free WordPress Theme from AllFreelanceWriting.com

Notes

Remember that I do not offer technical support for the downloads. If you have simple questions, please post them as a comment on this post (do not email me about them), and if I can help I will. This way when I can’t help, maybe another member can. I don’t make any guarantees regarding these templates and themes, and I don’t have most of them up on demo sites yet.

You can find more free WordPress themes and Web templates for freelance writers released exclusively through All Freelance Writing by browsing our full list of free stuff for writers.

To Download

Click the download link below.

Save the file to your hard drive.

Unzip / decompress the file (in Windows, right-click the file name and go to “extract all”).

That will save it to a decompressed folder.

Once you have the folder decompressed, you can upload the theme into your WordPress installation and activate it by clicking the “themes” link under “Appearance” from your WordPress admin. You can edit your theme files by visiting the “editor” link from the same menu.

You MUST also download and install the Twitter Widget plugin if you want the Twitter feed in the sidebar. The widget will go in the top sidebar section of your theme. Make sure you set that plugin to display only 1 recent tweet. There is an option in the plugin settings to hide @replies, but when I tried that it failed to pull the tweet stream, so you might not be able to do that.

I had our coder setup the test site for this theme, so I haven’t really played with it yet. So please, if you have questions just leave a comment here and I’ll take a look at the template files and try to help you get things sorted.

Let’s kick off this week full of freebies and announcements with a simple worksheet. Below you’ll find a download link for a free SWOT analysis worksheet. This is a very early excerpt from the next Web Writer’s Guide e-book, set to be a marketing workbook for freelance writers.

The first page of the .pdf includes a brief background on what a SWOT analysis is (lets you map out your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats), and it includes a sample filled out for a hypothetical freelance writer. The second page is a blank worksheet you can print and fill out in your own marketing planning process for your freelance writing services.

If you’d like to share this free tool with other freelance writers, please remember to link to this page or our list of free stuff for writers. Do not hotlink our download files directly. Thanks!

Today we officially launch the next freebie in our collection of free online tools for writers — a freelance writing hourly rate calculator. There are two modes — one to help you calculate your needed income level and hourly rate and another to let you play with hourly rates for any income goal you choose (want to earn a million bucks next year? plug in the numbers just for fun to see what you’d have to charge your clients). I’m including the full press release below with more details. You may publish it in full or in part if you’d like to share the news with others. The tool can be found with our free word count trackers and free WordPress themes at the “Get freebies” link in the black bar at the top of the blog. Enjoy!

–

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

All Freelance Writing Releases Free Dual-Mode Freelance Writing Hourly Rate Calculator

Philadelphia, PA — February 1, 2010 — Freelance writing blog, All Freelance Writing (http://AllFreelanceWriting.com), released a free dual-mode hourly freelance rate calculator today. The freelance rate calculator is the latest in their line of free online tools for writers, in addition to two previously-released word count trackers.

The freelance writing rate calculator works in two ways:

1. In its default simple mode, the hourly rate calculator allows freelance writers to enter their yearly income goal. That goal might be the minimum income they need to earn before quitting another full-time job or even their dream yearly income. The tool then helps them calculate their annual billable hours and then the resulting hourly rate they need to bill clients to meet their income goal.

2. In advanced mode — which freelancers can access through a link at the top of the default calculator — users don’t enter an income goal. Instead they enter data about expenses and desired savings, and the tool calculates the minimum annual income they have to earn to cover those things as well as the hourly rate to reach that minimum income level.

“This freelance writing rate calculator was based on a post written in 2007,” said All Freelance Writing Founder, Jennifer Mattern. “That article discussed issues freelancers face in setting their rates such as working hours versus billable hours and the fact that a freelance ‘salary’ is not directly equivalent to an employee salary of the same dollar amount. This tool takes the information and formulas in that article and makes it interactive, not just showing freelance writers how to set rates they can live with but actually helping them do it.”

The hourly freelance writing rate calculator can be found at http://allfreelancewriting.com/freelance-writing-rate-calculator/. Freelancers can choose one of six currencies for a more relevant display of results. In the advanced rate calculator, users are also directed to resources on U.S. and U.K. holidays to help them determine how many days they might want to take off each year in addition to vacation time and budgeted sick time.

All current and future free tools for freelance writers from All Freelance Writing can be found at http://allfreelancewriting.com/stuff-for-writers/ including the freelance writing rate calculator and two word count trackers. Free e-books and reports as well as free WordPress themes and Web templates are also available. All freelance freebies are distributed exclusively by All Freelance Writing. The original 2007 article the freelance hourly rate calculator is based on can be found at http://allfreelancewriting.com/2007/11/16/freelancing/business-career/setting-freelance-writing-rates-the-right-way/. The calculator page also includes instructions on converting the hourly rate calculated to per-word, per-page, or per-project rates to accommodate different freelance billing practices.

About All Freelance Writing

All Freelance Writing is a freelance writing blog run by freelance business writer and former public relations consultant, Jennifer Mattern. The blog was originally launched as a collaborative blog at SixFigureWriters.com (SFW) in 2006 and became AllFreelanceWriting.com in August of 2007 when the SFW blog was merged with Mattern’s freelance writing jobs blog (AllFreelanceWritingJobs.com). The blog now consists of a team of freelance writers covering business-related topics for freelancers such as finding higher paying freelance writing jobs, marketing tips for freelance writers, experiments in freelance writing, writer’s markets, free tools, and more. Mattern is also a co-founder of the Freelance Theater (FreelanceTheater.com) audio play series for freelance writers.

For more information about the freelance writing rate calculator, All Freelance Writing, or other free resources for freelance writers, please contact Jennifer Mattern at jenn@allfreelancewriting.com.

If you missed the previous announcement, the blog content from QueryFreeFreelancer.com was recently merged with All Freelance Writing. That includes already-released free Web templates and WordPress themes for freelance writers. These are exclusively available through me. They were purchased with full rights from their respective designers for the sole purpose of releasing them to you.

Unlike most free WordPress themes and Web templates, I do not require that you leave a credit link in the footer. Why not? Because I want you to be able to access free designs that don’t scream “FREE!” to the prospective clients who visit your website. It looks completely unprofessional to use a free design with those mandatory links (sometimes to completely irrelevant websites), but that doesn’t mean every freelance writer can afford to have a custom design coded. That’s where these templates fill in — to give you the best of both worlds.

Below you’ll find links to the three themes already released. I have several others that will be released in the near future.

To kick off the new collection of free online tools for writers that we’ll be releasing here at All Freelance Writing, I’d like to officially announce the launch of two new word count trackers. Yes, two (long story). If you don’t like one, you can play with the other.

I was lucky to find two guys who created two very different, but very cool trackers for you to play with. Whether you’re kicking off NaNoWriMo in a couple of days and working towards your 50,000 word novel or you just want to set a blog posting or income goal to share on your own site or blog, our new trackers can help you out!

Word Count Tracker #1

This is your basic word count tracker if you don’t want to customize things too much. That’s not to say it doesn’t offer plenty of features though! If you know a little bit about CSS you can use the advanced options to easily change the color and size of your progress bar to match your own site or fit any space (and without having to play with the final embed code to do it!).

You can use this word count tracker to track your NaNoWriMo progress, word count on an e-book you’re working on, or for a book (or pretty much any writing-related project) at any time during the year. You can either customize the size or you can choose from two presets — a small version that’s perfect for a narrow blog sidebar or a much larger version that you can use in a forum signature to share your progress with the world.

Word Count Tracker #2

Our second word count tracker is a cool little tool that you can use for much more than tracking your word counts. For example, if you set an income goal as a freelance writer and you want to keep your blog readers updated on your progress (for the year, month, or however long you choose), you can choose to track a dollar amount by entering that into our custom field. Or you can use our preset options to track words, pages, or posts (such as a certain number of blog posts each month). Do you know what’s really great about the custom field though? You can use this to track anything, even if it’s not writing-related! Need a weight loss tracker? Here you go! Want to count down until a vacation or other event? You can do that too! You can track just about anything you want!

After deciding exactly what you want to track, you can decide whether or not you want to display the percentage or just your progress level. You can also choose between three different output sizes for your progress bar (and if you know a bit of css and html, you can certainly adjust that manually in your embed code).

For right now our word count tools are pretty simple. We aren’t going with heavy image-based ones due to the fact that they’d likely crash the server. I also opted for word count trackers that have to be updated manually (also to cut down on admin work and load — you won’t be able to login and simply update your tracker, but instead will visit the tracker page and enter your new info each time). Down the road I may release a more advanced version of one or both of these tools, but for now I wanted to get them in your hands before NaNoWriMo for writers taking part, but also before the New Year when you’ll be setting new writing goals to track.

I hope you enjoy these word count trackers. If you have any problems while using them, please comment on their page and I’ll see what I can do.

A little while ago I asked you (and readers elsewhere) to nominate your favorite free online tools for writers and then vote on the top ten. The results weren’t completely surprising, but at the same time they didn’t turn out quite as I expected. Here are your must-have free online tools!

1. Paypal – Okay. This one was my biggest surprise (although maybe it shouldn’t have been). I almost didn’t include it in the actual list. Because there is technically a free option without the fees though, I did, and apparently people love their Paypal!

Tied for 2nd place in our list were:

2. WordPress – Can’t say I’m surprised (WordPress rocks), and

3. Gmail – I’m not a Gmail user myself (have an account but don’t use it for anything). I wasn’t surprised to see it nominated, but was surprised it was so high on your list.

Next we had:

4. Google Docs – With several nominations, I wasn’t surprised this made the list.

5. Open Office – If anything, I was surprised OO wasn’t higher.

Then we had a three-way tie for sixth place:

6. Skype – I don’t use this as much as I used to, but okay, it’s spot-worthy (especially if you need to talk to clients overseas a lot).

7. AVG Antivirus – This was a nomination I didn’t expect to see on the top ten list, but I do suppose we need something to take care of any nasty little buggers that might destroy our work!

8. Thunderbird – I was very surprised to see Thunderbird on the top ten list (an email client for those not familiar with it).

And then we had yet another tie, for 9th place (both related to the images you may need to find and / or edit for your blog posts, sites, or articles):

9. Stock Xchng – This is the free stock photo site I personally love (and if you need better quality, their premium site StockXpert.com is excellent as well).

10. GIMP – I think GIMP is absolutely worthy of a top ten spot, but honestly I was surprised it made the cut. I’m glad to see others agreed with me. If you aren’t familiar with GIMP, it’s a pretty robust image editor (free replacement for Photoshop essentially).

So a big thank you to everyone who voted in the survey and everyone who nominated great freebies for freelance writers! It was interesting to see what tools and services other writers get the most value from.

If you haven’t taken a look yet, this is also just a reminder that there’s a new “stuff for writers” link at the top of this site. Be sure to check out the free section of that for free reports and more that I’ve released.
