It's been a work in progress. I try to get in a few hours during the school day and then work again in the evening when my kids are winding down. I'm blessed with a very supportive husband--and he helps the kids get into bed at night. Now, summers and other vacation dates are different. My kids still need me to stand over them to get their chores done and I do have to battle with my kids' over screen time. So, I'm still working out those wrinkles. I'm hoping to send both kids to overnight camp this summer so that I at least get one week of peace during the summer months. I'm especially nervous about this upcoming summer (I know it's months away--but time flies by so quickly) since I started corporate writing this month that I'm going to have a real balancing act between family time and work load. We shall see.

My wife is also my business manager and someone I bookend every single piece of work off of. Regardless of whether it is a client project or personal pursuit. My working hours and ethic are supported and encouraged. I realize I am at a significant advantage. With a few changes coming to my practice her input has been tremendous and supportive. If I need to step away and perhaps not realize it, she will make the necessary comment and tell me to walk away from work for a bit.

My one year old (14 months) and I are inseparable, heck, I am usually wearing her or she at least is Breastfeeding, but she is very respectful of my work. I give her my iPhone while I use my iPad (now my primary "computer") or vice versa or a pen and paper if that's what I am up to, and she let's Mommy do her work while she does hers.

M husband has always been very supportive, and I am even going to help him get into some freelance writing of his own soon. He is busy developing his web comics and writing short stories, but always good to have another income stream!

I consider myself lucky that I have an understanding fiance. If I close the door to work, I know he won't get in my face with one question after the next. He'll generally let me be so I can focus on work, even if I'm working outside my normal hours. But Lori mentioned in another thread here last week that sometimes her family members (grown kids specifically) do interfere when she's trying to work.

So I'm curious. How do your family members and friends treat your working hours as a freelancer? Do they respect them? Do you have set hours when they know they should leave you alone, or is your work schedule so erratic that they never know when you're available and when you're not? How do you deal with it when they interrupt you while you're working?

I'd love to hear your stories, from horror stories about not being able to get anything done to stories about how you got loved ones to take your working time seriously. I know it's a struggle for some.

Jenn
