It isn't unusual for freelance writers to publish e-books of their own. Some write fiction, sometimes under a pen name. Some sell e-books to other writers (usually those of us who run blogs for other writers). And some target e-books to their potential clients -- either selling them or giving them away for free as a marketing tool.

E-publishing is largely about having an extra income stream in my own case. But I've also used free e-books to attract clients successfully (especially one I give away regarding press release writing).

Do you work as a freelance writer and also publish e-books? Do you think other freelance writers should consider it? Why or why not? If so, what are some of the biggest benefits you've seen from e-publishing?

Jenn

You should only be publishing e-books if you have something of value to share. It's becoming a weird trend for freelancers to write e-books to make money when they have nothing new or valuable to offer their readers. In fact, I've seen some scramble to get an e-book out there because they needed to earn money because they were losing a big client and didn't know how to find another…and who the hell wants to pay for advice from a person in that situation?

Not that this statement matters, because if you're the type of person to do that, one little Elafont isn't going to stop you :)

Well, if nothing else, maybe folks in that boat will see your comment and realize people notice when they do that.

Jeen, you have given so many good reasons to publish e-books, and I want to add one that is part of the income stream one. When you write and e-publish e-books, you stop just trading hours for dollars and you lift an inevitable ceiling on your income. Not that you can't earn plenty from clients, but there is so much more to be had from other income streams.

I missed our regular discussions, Jenn. How is WWG2 coming along?

It's on hold indefinitely. Attention right now is on two print books and Web development projects. And I won't release anything other e-books in the series until I re-release the first. It needs to be updated, get a new cover, and get the new 3 Beat Books branding in place before that. I'm not even sure if I'll keep that series. I'll likely roll it into the Query-Free Freelancer series or tie a series more directly to AFW. Putting too much emphasis solely on Web writers limits the market a bit more than I'd like.
