When you write content or copy for a client, how do you most often deliver your work?

For me it depends on the project. But I generally either upload the content directly to their website (for blogging clients) or deliver drafts in a Word file.

You?

Jenn

Same. But I wonder if that's one of the reasons why non-payment is such a perennial problem for writers? A programmer can hold back launch of the site until final payment's been made, or a designer can send an unusably small image through, but if we send a draft in a Word doc for them to review then they've got your work in a form they can use.

I'm curious to know if anyone's figured out a way round that.

I know some colleagues who get around it by either sending an image of the content or by sending only a portion of the content before payment.

Neither makes me completely comfortable, which is one of the reasons I bill up front instead. In the first case, they can always re-type the content if they want to steal it badly enough. And in the second case, you run the risk of clients not being willing to work that way -- and I don't blame them, as I probably would want to see the whole draft myself. To me it just seems easier to have them pay up front to reserve my time for their project. Those are terms I've found clients understand and agree to pretty easily anyway.

Personally I prefer delivering per e-mails. For example, if you have some problems with uploading it directly to the web-site of the client, you always have some confirmation that the work is done in due time.

I email in Word documents – even blog posts. That's my clients' preference and I do like the idea of the email trail for documentation purposes.

Cathy -- I'm sorry your post got stuck in moderation. The system is being wonky right now. It's only supposed to moderate the first post for each user. This has been a repeated problem with multiple versions of the forum software. It might soon be time to look for an alternative.

For me it's better to use e-mail delivery, so that I can have some kind of proof of the work fulfilled and delivered on time.

I'm with you on that. Emailing documents is great. And if a client says they didn't receive something, I just forward the original one so it carries the original time stamp for them too.
