OfflineWe've mentioned freelance offices a couple of times here recently. First LaToya Irby, a regular contributor to our blog, mentioned that dedicated work space can be a common sacrifice when you move from full-time work to freelancing. And here on the forums, I mentioned some changes I made to my own office and how little changes in my work space have a huge impact on the work I do.
So today let's talk about your work space. Are you fortunate enough to have an office where you can close yourself off to focus on work? Do you have a work space set up in another room -- dedicated space even if not a whole room? Do you work at the kitchen table or some other temporary location where you have to work around the rest of the family? Do you work in different places depending on the day, the weather, or your mood?
Tell us where you work now, and what you would change if you could.
Jenn
I am very fortunate to have a study. I share it with hubs, but he has an actual office to go to, so the sharing only happens in the early hours and after he comes home in the evening -- about the time I'm finished.
I don't know how I'd function if I didn't have this space. It's helped me "train" them all to let me be while I'm working. Too often they all think that because I work from home, I'm free to talk, run errands, make calls, take calls, chat, etc. It took a lot of screeching and threatening, but I have them all whipped into shape now. LOL
I do work in different places. When I was in Vancouver last month, I worked from the local Starbucks on my husband's new work laptop. I had emails to answer, invoices to get out, and assignments to confirm. I don't have a decent enough laptop to do that here (I've tried --the battery lasts less than an hour), but as soon as a few of these invoices come in, I'm going shopping.
If I could change one thing, it would be to lose this nasty metal filing cabinet. It's one of those wide, beige cabinets that stores three rows of files in one drawer. It's just ugly as hell. Maybe I could spray paint it, but I'd rather see it disappear altogether.
I don't even know if I could handle sharing office space occasionally. I've gotten so used to working alone. Last night I was sitting in my office and the hubby was curled up in a chair in the room. Every little noise was driving me crazy -- from his stomach grumbling to the cat kneading a blanket because he was petting her. And I wasn't even working! I think I was just born to be a hermit. ![]()
One of my laptop batteries was crap too. I got a relatively inexpensive replacement online with twice the advertised life. And I went from under two hours of life to over four, and that's with lousy settings (I keep my monitor bright on that machine because the maximum brightness isn't all that much). Not only did it help with battery life, but those are larger batteries. So they lift the back of the laptop as if you put it on a laptop stand. And that's more ergonomic. Much more comfortable to type. Close to the best $30 or so I've spent on office stuff. Might be worth looking around.

OfflineWe both work from home (he's a developer), and set up one of the bedrooms as our office. It doesn't drive me crazy to have him around, because I've never known it any other way. If anything, I work better when he's around because if I see him working hard, I feel guilty about slacking off
Ideally, we'd like to have specially organised office space where we can kind of cordon off our own areas so we're not facing each other, but that'll have to wait.
That's what my hubby does too, and he's hoping to eventually work from home full-time. Out of curiosity, do you collaborate on any projects? We're working on a small one for now. But I'm hoping we get to do that a bit more.

Yeah, we do sometimes. In fact, I started because one of his clients needed copy for their site, and the rest is history. Quite often I'll do little bits and pieces, like if he needs a good name for a button, or the client's supplied a really lousy tagline, and he just adds a bit extra to his bill. And usually he'll add a section about copywriting to his proposals, but I think he should be pushing it more

Offlinelol Definitely. We'll have the opposite here. He's working on Wordpress plugins for now, and mostly for my business until he has a good portfolio (he's also new to that, so he's learning as he goes). And I've already started spreading the word among my clients (big Wordpress users), so we're hoping that will help him get started. It's just tough because he's on a limited schedule while he has his full-time job, and he can't work in his current industry as long as he has that job.
It's nice seeing other couples work in a similar way though. Gives me hope it'll work out well.
