OfflineThere are a lot of social media tools out there these days. And they can have great marketing potential for your freelance writing services, books, or e-books.
What tools do you use for social media marketing?
My primary social media tool is Wordpress. We sometimes forget that blogs are social media tools because of all the hype around social networks these days. But they're one of the most popular.
I also use Twitter as my primary social networking tool (more to promote my sites and e-books than to get clients). And I use forums -- both this one and others in my niche (either to network with clients or colleagues).
Tell us what tools you use and why you love them.
Jenn
Hmm, well, Twitter is useful--no doubt--but it's not a preferred medium for me. This is just a personal preference--I can easily get drawn into convos that are complete time sucks and with my publishing schedule, I can't afford to do that. So I use Twitter, but mostly I just Tweet and run so people can't really converse with me.
I like my blog and the way my Facebook account it set up (like a fan page so I can't see my fans' pages) allows me to communicate and discuss things but not get distracted.
Also, my subscriber list is a great tool.

Offlinelol So you're the anti-social social media user?
(at least on Twitter)
For me Twitter is just a conversational tool. It's a chance to let readers get to know me off the blog. And I don't network much with clients there. I actively try to avoid it because I've had them expect me to use my personal account to promote them -- not happening.
I'm hoping to push into email marketing this year (with Aweber). There's tomorrow's post for ya -- soliciting tips on building those subscriber lists.
I am!! I'm just too undisciplined. Also, I don't know when I'm going to die so I'd like to spend all my living hours doing things I like more than those I don't and Twitter sometimes….um, no.

OfflineI market my work over LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, and I was going to get active on Biznik as well, but the staff company to make all profiles available for a fee, so now I'm stuck with a placeholder.
I'm not ready to pay $79/year for a non-Pro Biznik profile.
Tumblr is a good social tool as well, provided that you have a lot of active followers (I don't because I don't use it so often).
To market my ebooks, I go to:
- Blogs
- Forums
- Signature lines
- Press release services
- Email lists
