In our freelance writing careers, sometimes we have to tweak or even completely change our target markets. For example, if you significantly raise your rates, you might target a similar market, but different in that they have to be clients willing to pay more. In other cases you might offer completely different services, write in new target niches, or choose to work with different types of clients (like blogs to magazines or vice versa).
At this point in your career, do you think you'll change your target market any time soon? If so, why? And what changes do you foresee?
In my case, I don't plan to make any big changes although I'm always open to minor tweaking when necessary. I'm happy in my general market. I earn a good bit hourly so there isn't much room to move up on that front without major changes. And when I am ready for a change it will actually involve cutting back on clients. It's always been a part of the plan to get out of freelancing eventually -- focusing fully on my own books, e-books, and Web publishing efforts. It didn't happen as early as I originally hoped, but I expect it to within the next two years.
So what about you? Tell us about your plans.
