Why Google Chrome is my Favorite Multi-Blog Management Tool

By on October 24th, 2012

It’s no secret that I manage multiple blogs. Currently I have 50 active WordPress installations — large blogs, small blogs, author sites, business sites, and several in various pre-launch phases. Every work day I have to manage these blogs, including the ones that haven’t launched yet. What does this include? Approving comments that are in moderation queues Deleting spam comments Upgrading any out of date plugins I’ve installed Updating themes when new versions are released or old code becomes outdated Upgrading WordPress installations when new versions are released This could be a royal headache every morning. But it’s not. That’s …

New Blog Sneak Peak: WritingForBloggers.com

By on October 9th, 2012

I’ve recently talked about some new author websites I launched for my fiction writing pen names. But I’ve also been working on several new niche websites and blogs. Today I’d like to give you a sneak peek of my newest site for writers — WritingForBloggers.com. Writing for Bloggers is pretty self-explanatory. It’s about helping bloggers become better writers and improve their blogs in the process. It will cover things like: Content Strategy – Coming up with a long-term blog publishing plan Content Marketing – Ways improved writing skills can help you market your blog Copywriting – Moving between content writing and copywriting when …

Do You Stress Each Time Google Unleashes Algorithm Updates?

By on September 6th, 2012

My inbox has been flooded with newsletters that I subscribe to from SEO, marketing, and Web development sites. And lately all they seem to be talking about is Google. Panda. Penguin. Whatever update they’re rolling out or mucking around with at the moment, it’s always the same cry. “The Internet as we know it is ending! Duck, cover and prepare yourself for plummeting rankings and slashed income! Aaaaaah!” Seriously. That’s what it feels like nearly every time I check my email. Enough already. I’ve learned over the years not to let Google algorithm updates get my panties in a twist. …

New Guest Post Guidelines

By on August 20th, 2012

I’ve been bombarded with guest post requests lately, and it’s getting difficult to keep up with. And while we’ve discussed guest post guidelines in the past, many of these requests still don’t meet them. So I’ve decided to make them clearer on the site to give you a better idea of what we look for in guest posts and to make it a bit easier for you to get the information you need. If you’re interested in submitting a guest post to All Freelance Writing, please review the new guest post guidelines. Also, please don’t use our contact form to …

The Two Sides of the Guest Post Story

By on May 11th, 2012

By: Cathy Miller Guest posts are one of the hottest strategies for increasing online visibility. Like most marketing strategies, there are different opinions on how to do it right. I am not a fan of the do it this way, not that way mantra. You need to find what works for you. However, there are two sides to the guest post story – the side of the guest blogger and the one of the host blogger. And, therein lies the problem. If the two don’t mesh, it’s not going to happen. The Host Blogger I appreciated Jennifer Mattern’s guidelines in …

Building New Income Streams When Client Work is Slow

By on October 16th, 2011

This article is a part of a five post series for Demand Media Studios writers and others interested in leaving content mills and other low paying freelance writing jobs behind.  We’ve already looked at why freelance job boards aren’t the best places to find gigs and how you can make it easier for clients to find you through your writer platform. But what can you do in between client projects, as you wait for responses to your pitches or while you’re still growing your platform? You can build additional non-client income streams (and some of these are actually a part of your writer …

Need WordPress Design Help?

By on June 22nd, 2011

Update: I’m happy to say that KeriLynn and I finally sorted out the mess of that other designer’s theme! She was able to create a new template file and I set it as a home.php file to override the designer’s functions which were already overriding WordPress settings for what should display on the homepage. Whew! It takes a lot of patience to sort out and fix bad coding in some cases, and most designers won’t help you do this for a third party’s theme (and I can’t blame them!). I couldn’t recommend KeriLynn highly enough, whether you need help sorting …

3 Places to Get Great WordPress Themes

By on June 8th, 2011

There’s no question about it. Blogging can be great for your freelance writing business. Your blog can attract clients. You can use it to create a “living” portfolio of your writing. Your blog can highlight your niche expertise. And blogging can connect you to colleagues and prospects you want in your professional network. It can also bring in direct income and be a lot of fun. One of the earliest things you’ll do when you launch a new blog is choose its design, or theme. Generally I recommend WordPress as a blog platform for writers (and anyone else really), so …

Tips and Tools for Managing Multiple Blogs

By on May 11th, 2011

Yesterday we talked about when it makes sense to have multiple blogs, and I shared some information on some of the main blogs I run. But even if it makes sense for you to launch several blogs, that doesn’t mean you have the time or energy to stick with it. Having done this for years — managing multiple blogs and knowing when to launch more vs letting them go — I want to share some simple tools and habits that have made multi-blog management easier. Blog Development First let’s look at the early development, which can be time consuming and …

When it Makes Sense to Have Multiple Blogs

By on May 10th, 2011

In addition to being a freelance writer for clients I’m also a professional blogger and Web developer in my own right, running several different types of websites over the years including dozens of different blogs. That experience lets me appreciate the value having multiple blogs can bring through exposure, new contract work if you’re looking for it, and product sales. But running multiple blogs isn’t easy, and it isn’t for everyone. Might it be a good option for you? Here are a few situations where it might make sense for you to launch more than a single blog. Multiple Blogs …
