Have Somewhere to Send your Prospects

You could spend several hours each day cold calling prospects. You could send out hundreds of letters to editors. You could send cold emails until your fingers are ready to fall off. But guess what? If you don’t have somewhere to send these prospects you are spinning your tires.

In other words, you need a professional website for your freelance writing business. Sure, you can get by without having one but in the long run it can really help take your career to the next level.

For many years, I relied on several websites to explain my services and attract new business online. However, over the past year I began to realize that I was making a mistake. I was spreading myself too thin, not putting enough time and effort into each web property.

After considering all my options, I decided to focus more time on my freelance writing blog while also rolling out ChrisBibey.com.

My blog touches on tips for freelance writers. From dealing with angry clients to marketing advice and much more, I enjoy providing tidbits of information here and there.

My new site, however, is more service oriented. It is structured more like a “static website” with a blog being secondary. This gives me the chance to bring everything together under one roof, including: services, testimonials, and basic information about myself.

So far so good. Since rolling out the site a couple months ago I have made great progress. Not to mention the fact that I now know where I am going to send clients when marketing my services or when more information is requested of me.

If nothing else, remember these three points:

  • With a professional website, you always have somewhere for your prospects to learn more about you. Even if they don’t hire you right now, they can always visit your website in the future should they need your services.
  • You can control the content. Want to add samples? Done. How about references and testimonials? Easy enough. You can present yourself however you desire.
  • One site is easier to manage than several – don’t make the same mistake as me.

  1. And the reality is, it’s what people who are in the market for writers expect. People ask me if I have a website as much as they ask if I have a business card. I can’t imagine not being able to send a prospect to my website.


  2. Chris, I remain amazed at the number of working writers who do not have a website. How do clients find you if you don’t help them?
