Ladybug
Ladybug is a magazine for ages 3 to 6. They look for short works of fiction (maximum 800 words), rebus stories (up to 200 words), and nonfiction (maximum 400 words) that pay up to $0.25/word. They also accept poetry (up to 20 lines) that pays up to $3.00/line with a $25 minimum payment.
Latitude 38
Latitude 38 predominantly focuses on sailors in the Northern California region. Feature articles of 1500-2500 words are paid at a rate of at least $125. Sightings contributions (500-750 words) receive $50 - $125.
Light & Life Magazine
Light & Life Magazine is a monthly magazine from the Free Methodist Church -- USA. They accept a variety of freelance submissions such as 2100 word features, 1000 word action articles, 800 word print discipleship articles, and 500-1000 words for online articles. The publication pays $100 for feature articles and $50 for action and discipleship articles. (Note: They may not pay for other types of articles or blog posts.)
Lightspeed
This monthly magazine features science fiction and fantasy stories. They pay $0.08/word for original fiction (it should be between 1,500 and 10,000 words; stories under 5000 words are preferred) and they pay $0.02 for reprints.
Listverse
Listverse publishes list-based posts covering topics ranging from the bizarre to entertainment to science. They pay $100 per accepted post via Paypal. Posts must include at least ten list items.
Longreads
Longreads accepts submissions of essays and curated reading lists from freelance contributors. Essays and columns run 2000-6000 words. Personal essays should be pitched on-spec, and they pay $500 per essay. Researched and reported essays, critical essays, and columns may be pitched. They also pay $500 per essay. Curated reading lists pay $350.
Los Angeles Times - Travel
The LA Times accepts freelance contributions to its travel section, both in print and online. They buy first North American rights, and have strict ethical standards (please review their linked guidelines for details). They prefer 2000-word first-person pieces and 500-700 word "Guidebooks." Pay starts at $200 (and starts at $350 for destination feature stories).
Midwest Living
This lifestyle magazine focuses on the Midwest region of the U.S. They generally run 100-1000 word articles on their website. Pay varies, but they state a first-time writer working with them could generally earn around $200 for one of these scouting or online content assignments.
Military Families
Military Families is a monthly magazine for members of the military and their families. It's published by AmeriForce Media. They accept essays, interview-style profiles, advice, news reports, listicles, and more. Pay ranges from $75-200 depending on length, experience, commitment required, and whether the piece is for the print or digital editions.
Model Railroad Hobbyist
Model Railroad Hobbyist publishes articles and videos "on all aspects of model railroading and on prototype (real) railroading as a subject for modeling." Articles typically run around 3000 words with 10 photos and a short video clip (payments being $230 for these). $200-600 per feature is typical, though they've paid over $1000 for longer articles as well (such as through their website where length isn't an issue).
