Indy's Child

Indy's Child is a parenting magazine focusing on the Indianapolis market. Payments are based on assigned word counts, and they pay after publication.

Informed Comment

Informed Comment covers political and policy issue around beats including the environment, energy, foreign policy, politics, and the economy. Typical contributors are "high-powered professionals with higher degrees and/or extensive publications in national, prominent venues" such as The Washington Post, The Nation, or Salon. Contributors not meeting those standards are discouraged from applying. Each contribution may cover one point only, over 800-1000 words. They pay a $100 honorarium via PayPal.

International Living

International Living publishes content about the positive sides of living, working, and retiring overseas. They're open to submissions for their Daily Postcards as well as stories from expats to be published on the International Living website.

Jewish Currents

Jewish Currents is a print (quarterly) and digital publication covering politics, culture, and ideas through the perspective of the Jewish left. Articles cover topics such as the Israel / Palestine conflict, inner workings of Jewish communal organizations, diasporic cultural expression, and more. The publication also considers poetry, but only reads unsolicited poems during the month of June. In-depth web features pay at least $1000. News reports start at $500, analysis and reviews start at $400, and print features are paid $1.00 / word.

Knitty.com

Knitty.com accepts freelance submissions of knitting articles / tutorials / patterns. Pay attention to the writer's guidelines for notes on when to submit season-specific tutorials. Payments run $200-300 per submission.

Latitude 38

Latitude 38 predominantly focuses on sailors in the Northern California region. Feature articles of 1500-2500 words are paid at a rate of at least $125. Sightings contributions (500-750 words) receive $50 - $125.

Lightspeed

This monthly magazine features science fiction and fantasy stories. They pay $0.08/word for original fiction (it should be between 1,500 and 10,000 words; stories under 5000 words are preferred).

Listverse

Listverse publishes list-based posts covering topics ranging from the bizarre to entertainment to science. They pay $100 per accepted post via Paypal. Posts must include at least ten list items.

Longreads

Longreads accepts submissions of essays and curated reading lists from freelance contributors. Essays and columns run 2000-6000 words. Personal essays should be pitched on-spec, and they pay $500 per essay. Researched and reported essays, critical essays, and columns may be pitched. They also pay $500 per essay. Curated reading lists pay $350.
